Winter Wheels and Tires

My 2009 GT has the 18 inch aluminum rims with low profile tires. I am thinking that they will not be very good for winter driving here in MN. Apparently the GT has a different bolt pattern from the base model. A little searching on the site and I found that someone recommended 16 inch wheels from a ...

Re: New key for a 2009?

The 2009 GT that I fixed up last summer only came with one key. I bought a couple of fob keys on eBay and went through the goofy dance to program them to the car. They work to lock and unlock the doors with the buttons, but I haven't gotten the keys cut to try in the ignition. From my investigation ...

Re: Gen 2 Steering Rattle

It seems that several people have reported changing that intermediate shaft with no improvement. I think that may be a fix for a different problem. If you check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I73elBQ8UXA It shows the problem with the coupling in the electric power steering. The guy ...

Gen 2 Steering Rattle

My 09 GT has been running good, but it has a rattle that has been annoying me since I got it going. Most noticeable at low speed on rough surfaces.I took off the wheels one by one and looked at all the suspension and brake parts to see if it was one of them. Finally realized it is in the steering co...

Re: New 2003 GT Owner

Things do look a bit worn in there. Maybe I missed it, but how many miles? You mention adjusting the master cylinder. I put a new clutch in my 09 when I replaced the engine. I hadn't worked on a hydraulic clutch before and I was surprised to not find a spring to lift the throw out bearing away from ...

Re: Ready to Roll

Thanks for the link. I wish I had seen it before I ordered them. Wish I had made time to work on them before the deadline for returns had passed also. Oh, well. Such is life. KYB emailed back and suggested the AWD units (340017) should work, but they didn't apologize for having the wrong info. I won...

Ready to Roll

I've been meaning to post an update for quite a while, but just didn't get to it. My engine replacement project went pretty well. I ended up crossing my fingers and buying one of the JDM motors. I was reluctant to do that because of the unknown history, but it seems to have worked out ok. I had to r...

Re: Is it possible the shop screwed up my daughters head gasket while changing timing cover gasket and valve pan gasket

You don't say whether it is the 1.8L or 2.4L engine, but more than likely the 1.8L. I can't say much about those, but on the 2.4L the head bolts definitely do not have to be disturbed to replace the timing chain cover. I recently had to do that on a used engine I put in an 09 Gt. The engine came out...

Re: Clutch Question

I haven't seen anything about it in the service info I have either, but it seems like there should be something to keep the throwout bearing off the pressure plate so the bearing isn't spinning all the time. I haven't worked on a clutch for a long time, but every other one I've seen is that way. Jerry

Clutch Question

I am getting my 09 GT back together and have a question about the clutch. There doesn't appear to be any spring there to retract the fork and throwout bearing from the pressure plate. I am wondering if there is supposed to be one and how it connects.

Thanks,

Re: 2.4L 2AZFE post mortem

The balance shafts will turn. I rotated them a little to take the picture so that the broken gear would be visible. Until I rotated it, I wasn't sure how it worked because I only saw the little nubs on the shaft. I agree that the motor is junk. If it didn't have the hole in the main block I might ha...

Re: 2.4L 2AZFE post mortem

Borrowed a 12mm allen socket so I could remove the threaded nipple for the oil filter. There is a bolt above that holding the castings together. Jolt may be right about running out of oil. The number 4 crank journal is pretty beat up. No sign of the rod cap so I'm thinking that it exited through the...

Too bad you're not closer. I would donate the engine I removed for your rebuild. Just more work than I was up for!

Re: 2.4L 2AZFE post mortem

We are on lockdown here so I have had some more time to work on my project. I got the engine out and pulled the transmission off. Then the clutch and flywheel. Some more bits of aluminum fell out and I found where the rod had punched through the side of the block. Crank end.jpg Close up Hole in bloc...

Re: 2.4L 2AZFE post mortem

Mine is automatic. Came from salvage yard. Very detailed, with lots of pics of car and engine. I had no problem with passenger axle. Just unbolted the support from engine and removed whole. In great shape (GA car, 85k miles), so no need to separate support from axle. My problem was driver's side. E...

Re: 2.4L 2AZFE post mortem

Wow was that bearing ever stuck in the support. Luckily, I have access to some equipment at work for situations like this. The press is essentially a big frame with a hydraulic bottle jack to push on things. I set it up with supports on the bearing housing and started pumping. I was afraid the casti...

Re: 2.4L 2AZFE post mortem

Pulled mine out the top with trans. Very easy. 1st engine swap. Got a 65k donor engine from a 2015 Scion xB. Japanese built engine. Direct swap. No timing chain cover swap, and engines mounts perfect. Only thing I had to swap was the passenger side CV axle support. Excellent! Thanks for the info. W...

Re: Am I screwed?

Those are pretty good prices. I have not found anything that cheap with those miles around me. It does seem like the Matrix engines are more expensive for the same thing. Re: 2.4L 2AZFE post mortem

I appreciate the offers, guys! Is there a procedure in there for engine removal that shows whether or not a 2.4L can be taken out the top without the transmission? My guess is it can't because there is only about an inch from the engine to the body on the passenger side and I am sure the clutch stic...

Re: Am I screwed?

From what I've heard about these engines, a rebuild isn't economical. There should be a decent one somewhere in salvage. I agree. These engines are a dime-a-dozen, and rebuilding isn't really worthwhile, especially since the 2.4L had oil burning issues anyways. Best bet is to find the newest 2.4L y...

I am not familiar with Helms manuals. I checked their web site and don't see anything like that. They only had the owners manuals available. I am working on the same type of vehicle. An 09 with 2.4L. I hadn't considered the question of interference or not. Re: 2.4L 2AZFE post mortem

I don't think that's it. Look at the second picture. That shows shearing bent _into_ the oil pan compartment, not outwards, as it would be if it was just the rod coming loose. I'm suspecting an impact from something underneath, then when the oil blew out - it ate itself. You may be right. I just ga...

2.4L 2AZFE post mortem

I thought I would start a new thread and try to put some pictures in it. I don't have the engine out yet, but I took the pan off. This is the underside with the balance shafts. Re: Another newbie

From the reading I have done, one of the issues with this engine isn't that it leaks oil, but rather burns oil. Apparently the relief holes in the pistons behind the oil control rings get plugged up and then the oil consumption goes up dramatically. There is a TSB with detailed instructions on repla...

I was also looking into TPMS info since I just picked up an 09 and three of the valve stems had metal caps corroded on bad enough that I twisted off two valve stems. I am not sure if this is 100% accurate, but looking at the Denso part on Rockauto, they show these models using the same p/n. I have a couple of friends who really like their Vibes so when I saw an 09 GT project on Craigslist nearby, I picked it up.
