UPDATE:Quote, originally posted by Wired.com »Tesla Motors staged a grand opening of its new factory in Northern California, a largely symbolic but nevertheless key milestone in the history of the company and the electric car that will determine its future. There was a sense of limitless possibility as company CEO Elon Musk, joined by Sen. Dianne Feinstein and a slew of local officials, unveiled a huge “Tesla” sign at what used to be the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. factory in Fremont. Toyota shuttered the place in April and sold it to Tesla Motors one month later for $42 million. Its resurrection as the factory that will build the Model S sedan brought the usual talk of green jobs and a brighter future.IMHO: Nothing speaks brighter future like one prototype in an empty factory shipping dock...Link to full online post -->http://www.wired.com/autopia/2...ll-it/

The October issue of Wired magazine has a cover article on Tesla and their purchase of the NUMMI plant. The plant is actually worth billions, but apparently Toyota didn't have any plans for it and Toyota's CEO Akio Toyoda had met with Tesla execs and driven the Tesla Roadster (he's apparently a former test driver) and loved it. So he green-lighted the sale to Tesla for only $42 million.I hope Tesla can pull it off with the Model S and beyond, and keep that place humming and people working!

That certainly should give Tesla a leg up by buying a plant like that for only $42 mil. One wonders why GM didn't buy it at that price - but then there is the cost of dealing with the many peculiarities of California.

I doubt that will last long. Tesla's products aren't exactly extraordinary & the price of their roadster keeps going up. I sure as hell would never want to buy one. In 5 years I wouldn't be surprised to see them go bankrupt from lack of sales....which would mean this plant closes yet again.
