Long term 1ZZ considerations and a couple questions

Post by BoostFrenzy »

Car is a 2003 base vibe auto with ~146k on the clock, always ran Mobil1 5w-30 turbo diesel truck and coolant/tranny flushes every 50k, maintenance schedule religiously followed and no stones unturned. In the last 15k miles i've noticed about 1/2 quart oil consumption over ~5000 miles of the oil change interval (every 7500 miles), see no external leaks so I believe the engine is beginning to consume oil slightly, MPG is still less-than-impressive as it always was around ~27mpg highway @ 75-80mph (this car is primarily a highway commuter), I always change the air filter and clean the MAF every few monthsAlso noticing some corrosion and surface rust forming between the windshield and sunroof on the roof, although no rock chips up there, how long is the corrosion protection valid on a 03?Overall it's been a problem free car, although the lackluster fuel economy and corrosion concerns are a bit disappointing with such an economy feaure/power-less vehiclethoughts?

I have 147K miles I don't know Mobil-1 oil variants. Is diesel truck oil the same as little gasoline car oil?On oil consumption, I haven't seen the level drop on my dipstick between changes, but I always seem to get out less than I think I should, but it still takes a full gallon . The oil fiter isn't big enough to make up the difference. Some sort of magic going on there in mine. If you think its burning oil, check the spark plugs. maybe run a dry/wet compression test. I haven't run the compression test on mine, I wish I had when it was new, a baseline to compare against now.People seem to get a wide range of MPG, for no apparent reason. MPGs were a big part of my decision to buy a Vibe, it I averaged as low as 27, I'd be upset. Lots of potential causes for poor mpg, hard to know what to recommend. I have noticed that MPGs drop when I go over 70. Your sig says it's the GF's Vibe. Is she an aggressive, or perhaps "sporty" driver? Would be interesting to know what MPGs she gets if she kept it at or under the speed limit for a whole tank (if she can, sometimes that's tough ) The rust warranty is listed in the overall warranty doc, if you don't still have it, you can download a copy of it, the owners manual, and some other things from http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=1010it saysQuote, originally posted by "2003 Warranty, page 7" »Sheet Metal CoverageSheet metal panels are covered against corrosion andrust-through as follows:Corrosion: Body sheet metal panels are covered againstrust for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.Rust-Through: Any body sheet metal panel that ruststhrough (an actual hole in the sheet metal) continues tobe covered for up to 6 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.so we are both well beyond that 100K mile cutoff although, I haven't seen any rust there. Some people have also had rust form under the hatch glass weatherstripping, but I've been lucky on that one also.
