Ugh, it isn't pleasant. I'm not sure what size bit I used, but I do have the pack of rivets I used to reinstall the stock speakers out in the car. I'll get outside tonight and make a note of what size they are. Perhaps that will help...It took quite a bit of drilling for mine, those things are pretty stubborn!

Yeah, use a larger bit. You just need to pop the head off the rivet so it'll fall out the other side. You need a drill with torque, and you need to push on it..

depending on what youa re installing, you dont need to remove teh bracket at all.on the vibe, i removed teh stock speakers and put teh blau's in that bracket as is.in teh vue, i tore the ridge off teh bracket and the speakers fit fine.see my post hereif you wanna try it
cant tell for sure from that, but it looks like they dont have an outer lip, you should be able to mount those right in without drilling teh rivets to me.
Keep in mind, you'd be destroying the stock speakers that way...

Destroy it! Basically..you need to rip the cone out..you can use a knife to cut the outer surround of the speaker.. then use whatever you can to break the inner plastic supports on the magnet. And voila! Speaker mounting bracket.

yayaya destroy!!!!what i did was pull the center of the cone out and the rim will want to rip off the outer bracket (its just glued on, no cutting neccesary if you pull slow and steady) then i used a cutter to cut the plastic pieces at the outer rim. see picture from cohocarls post:
