News: Toyota will pay for sludge problems killing engines!

Post by Fformula88 »

Thought this might be of interest since the Vibe has a Toyota drivetrain, although not the one in question: http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/200 ... sludge.htm Basically, Toyota 2.2L I4 and 3.0L V6 engines built from 1997-2002 and available in the Camry, Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, and Lexus ES and RX 300's has some design flaw which is causing oil sludge to kill the engine.Toyota believes the real reason is maintenance neglect and going to long between oil changes. They are also going to reimburse anyone who has had to repair their car because of this problem, pay for any rental car expenses, and have redesigned the parts in question to avoid any future problems. Its nice to see they haven't decided just to abandon their customers who may not be under warrenty anymore!

Just a quick correction. I believe the powertrain in the Vibe/Matrix is actually produced by Yamaha.Dan

Yamaha helped develop the engine for the Celica. They don't produce it. They sure don't produce the rest of the drivetrain

The engine in the Vibe GT/Matrix XRS was co-developed between Yamaha and Toyota. It is built by Toyota. The base 1.8L engines are stock Toyota Corrolla engines and all trannies are Toyota.
