2003 Vibe needed New wheel bearing at 38,000 km

Post by nonstop »

My 2003 Vibe is dealer maintained to schedule and developed a front end noise that started @ 60 kph and faded away at 120 kph. Dealer diagnosed a bad front right wheel bearing and replaced the hub assembly containing same. OK now, but has anybody else had front end issues. The car is 15 months old and 2/3 through my Warranty. Hmm. Continental tires are hanging in OK and brake wear is very slight.

Has it been lowered or is it stock?

You might be the first here to lose a bearing. seems early for that though, , but at least it was covered under warranty.

Keep an eye on those conti tires though... those will start making a "bearing" noise when they get worn out.

Actually, the drive-train is stock and the wheels were rotated with the noise not related to a specific wheel/tire combo.

Phil, correct me if I am wrong. But I think he's just saying to you, nonstop, that when those tires do finally start to wear, it will sound similar to the noise you heard when the bearing went. So you might think your bearing is messed up again when in fact it's the tires.

yes thats what I ment Mike, that he should keep an ear to see if the sound does come back cause it likely will when those tires wear out. I am sure it was a bearing as he said since the noise is gone... but I had a Vibe here with that sound and it was the tires.basicly just giving you a heads up

No problem, I did catch the caution that pending tire wear could induce a similar sound. Appreciated very much.

Could use some advice.I used to work as a service advisor for GM/Pontiac/Buick until 2005 until jumping ship to Subaru in 2005 when I moved. To answer your question though I have heard of bearings on wheels and in transmissions going bad on the Vibes. Not on mine though fortunatly and I take mine to its limit all the time.
