aftermarket ignition coil question-

Post by jamesmetairie »

05 base, vibe. about 189,000 miles on it. It,s still got about 3 outta 4 original coils in it. I only drive to about 5,000 miles annually nowadays.. Question = Would the average aftermarket ignition coil set from auto zone or advance make the car run smoother and last a few years. I assume some of the idle roughness may be caused by old, worn out ignition coils..

I say don't risk it. I tried replacing coils as a tune up about the same mileage, and two of the new coils failed in months. There were supposedly OEM, identical to the originals. I ended up putting all the originals back in and they're working fine at 230K miles.

I agree with Andy. I just replaced my second one ever on my 2004 Vibe GT and went with the Denso 6731305. Three years ago I replaced the first one ever. Stick with Denso for all critical parts. you won't regret it! Vibe is now at a young 205k miles

Exact same here. Bought four new coils from a "reputable" seller on ebay just cause I thought it would be a good tuneup thing to do. They started failing within a few weeks, I got a couple replacements from the seller that also failed and ended up just putting the originals back in. But for a while I kept a code reader, spare coil and 1/4" drive ratchet with 10mm socket in the back of the car. If they ain't broke don't try to fix them.
