I changed my oil today woot woot! Mobil One with a PH3614 Fram filter. Was weird though because the old filter the dealership used was an AC Delco and the seating on it was smaller. Wonder if the dealership was putting on the wrong oil filter. I don't know what the model number on it was cause its covered in oil but I do find it strange usually they should be the same size!

There is a Mobile 1 filter. It is the M1-103. I used it and Mobile 1 in my oil change on Sunday. I love doing oil changes in the Vibe. Nothing in the way! Different story for the Yukon XL. I burn my hand on the exhaust and run oil all over the Ujoints and drive shaft.
This is the first car I've ever done my own oil on...the first time I did it with a jack and stands...but decided getting them under there was way more trouble than it's worth...so next time around I'm gonna give it a shot as is...But with the stands, it was very easy to find the filter and drain plug...so I don't expect any troubles with my next change...Except for maybe taking it to be recycled without it staining my car again...

my dealer uses the ac delco filter as well. from the little research i've done, it's a pretty good filter. can't say the same for the fram. do a search on the net on fram filters. hopefully they have improved on their product.
the oil filter i suggest is what came on the car, which in my case it wasa toyota filter, ive used it since i had the car new and they havebeen great, and a hell of alot cheaper than gm partsgm>
Here's a question. Why does Fram specify the same filter for Vibe GT and 2001 Neon, but Purolator is different?I just changed the oil in my wife's Neon last night and I am thinking that maybe I won't use Fram anymore (even though I've used it for years). I'm driving to Florida next month (from Chicago) in the Vibe and I am worried about the Fram driving down and back (2500 miles). I do oil changes every 5000 miles because I drive mainly toward the "light" schedual than the "heavy" schedual.
Hey, I had a Ranger too.. Though it was a 97. Was very easy to change the Oil on as well. I did however drive the truck up on 2x8's laid flat to give me a bit more clearance. I may try that with the Vibe as well. I can tell that will be just as easy since you can see everything clearly with nothing in the way. Dave

I was confused because when I went to Auto-Zone to get a filter, the M1-103 was smaller than the Fram PH3614 filter which is for the GT. Since Auto-Zone didn't have a parts list book that contained the VibeGT (though they did have other '03 models), I found that the M1-102 cross-references with the Fram which is also in their computers as being the right Mobil Oil filter for the GT. The M1-103 seems to be for the Base model. Dave
Toyota filter here.And after spilling craploads of dirty oil on the garage floor at the last change, and the rapid onset of colder weather, I think I may go back to having someone else do it...Argh!

To make things easier on your self use jack stands and spread them out to give yourself plenty of space to work. Do not worry about using a filter wrench. Use chanel locks and slowly turn the filter off then put it in the pan. Then remove the plug. First remove the cap on the engine and pull the dipstick out. This will prevent splatting and enable a smooth flow. Go out and invest in the $15 pan that has handles and the spout to pour. It will be worth every penny if you are a novice.

OK, the Fram 4967 cross-references to the Mobil M1-103, right? This one is in the books at Auto-zone as being the one for the 1zz and 2zz Celica engines (Because they don't have the Vibe or Matrix in there yet).The Filter recommended on here is the Fram 3614 which cross-references to the Mobil M1-102. This is the Filter that the Wal-Mart filter book thingie recommends for the 2zz engine.THere is a sizeable difference between the 2. I do understand that one engine has more oil in it than the other but why does my service tech tell me the 3615 and M1-102 are both too big for my VibeGT and then proceeds to put a small delco filter in which is the same size as the Fram 4967 ?Shouldn't my service tech know what filter to put on? Why are basic parts so difficult to locate and to verify?!?!?! Someone tell me what's correct, pleeeeeze!!!Dave
The AC Delco part number is the same for both engines. Anyone who tells you any different needs to come see me here at SPO headquarters so I can kick them in the nads. #PF1233 DURAGUARD fits all three SN=GT, SL=Base, SM=AWD vehicles.

For those who are wondering about FRAM filters the new Fram X2 series are the best, matching K&N filters and even having higher filtration. If you use engine treatments,(Which you should avoid using for the first 50,000Km/35,000Mil,) to help protect during the time between starting and when the oil gets to the parts. The reeason is that most filters alow the oil to return to the pan. The new FRAM filters have a one way check valve which keeps the oil in the gallies not in the pan which means as soon as you start your engine the oil is right there. Use Castrol or any full syntheic 5W50 oil and you'll never have a problem. My 98 Cavalier after 6 years the oil still comes out golden at each 7,000Km change even after 180,000kms on her!
hey any of you guys that do your own oil worry about marking up your frame rails/underbody? i use blocks of wood under my jackstands/floor jack but i still manage to dent it up!!!! anyone got any idea other than jack your car up slower? my wife just does not think a lift is a worthwhile expense right now.
If you are just changing your oil and have not lowered your Vibe you won't need a lift or jack to change your oil. I have changed mine several times now. Just lie flat on your back and you should be able to slide far enough under the front end to reach the plug and filter.Jim

I'm definately in the "does not fit under the car" catagory. Rather than bothering with jacking up the car and using jack stands, etc., I long ago invested in a set of Rhino ramps. I think they're still about $27 at Walmart or O'Reileys. They raise the vehicle about 7-1/2" or so.

Just did an oil change last night and noticed that the Purolator L14477 filter on my GT was leaking. I put it on tight and it was hard to get off, so I am wondering if anyone else has had a problem with it. I put another one on and really cranked it down (by hand), maybe an extra 3/4 -1 turn. I'm sure that it will be a pain to get it back off .If this one leaks (will check it in about 1000 miles) I will have to change filters yet again. Maybe I'll just go back to using fram filters.
No, there were just a couple of drips down the sides of the filter. It didn't leak much, because the dipstick still said pretty close to full.Maybe, now you've got me paranoid. No, I even checked the driveway and garage and no oil stains, so it wasn't leaking more than a few little drips running down the filter.
A couple of drips could just happen while the seal of the filter closes as the temp rises. It sounds like you may not have put enough oil on the seal before you put the new one on the vehicle. It happens and not to worry. The filter did its job by getting some oil once your pump started working and sealed itself.

I'm wondering if I forgot to do that last time. I thought the same thing and made sure that I put a good coat on this time. I've changed the oil 4 times, 2097, 5230, 11134 and 15665. The first two were with Fram filters and the last two with Purolator filters. All have been with Quaker State oil. Everything seems fine, except that little bit of oil on the filter.
I use the exact same filter on my GT and have not had any problems with it. The reason I like this filter is the fact that it is a bit larger than the other filters available. I tighten mine by hand as well. I don't really "crank down" on it. When it's time to change my oil, I can still loosten it and remove it by hand with no problems.Jim

Well I finally did my own oil change... I got tired of service people telling me one thing then hearing what seem to be more logical here so I tried a few things myself... and this is what I did...I removed the Delco Filter which, btw, leaked oil all over me. Someone had posted that nothing leaks out of the filter area when removing... Well, maybe I should drained the pan first... oopsie... Anywho, I know the Fram 4967 is the appropriate replacement filter for the OEM delco which also corresponds to the M1 103 from Mobil, well, I found a Fram 4386 which has the same footprint as the Delco but about 3/4 of an inch longer. I read somewhere that a longer filter is better so I went with it. In the process I tried my M1-102 which I had bought some time ago and then the service man told me it wouldn't fit, showing me the different footprints... Well, it did fit though the metal lip was just outside the seat, the gasket was full on the seat. I ended up using the Fram 4386 because I didn't have the right filter wrench for the M1-102...Dave
Wow is that oil filter small!!! My Civic with a 1.5 has a bigger oil filter than the 3967. Has anybody tried a larger filter? If so, have you noticed a difference in how dirty your oil is?

hi ebslopp,I have the GT, & was using the Fram 4967 model of filter which was dinky.... A bit smaller than the Purolater 14477. I used a slightly longer Fram 2 oil changes ago... Don't remember the number. This last time I decided to use a Mobil M1 filter... Not the 103 which is recommended but the 102 which is both wider and longer. The filter gasket just fits. Have driven about 1000 miles so far without any leaks. Will either continue with the Mobil M1-102 or will switch to the K&N equivalent, which is the HP-1002.Dave
Anybody care to recommend a good place online to buy the Toyota filter for the base model Vibe (Toyota part number 90915-YZZA2)? I've been changing oil in my cars long enough to know that OEM filters are the way to go, but I hate buying them at inflated dealership prices.Thanks!

A filter that "allows the oil to return to the pan" is not correct for our cars and should not be used. Any filter you see that is recommended for use will have an anti-drainback valve(what you refer to as a 1-way check valve) to keep oil in the filter. And the fram X2 filters don't hold a candle to the K&N filters, not even close...And 5w50 is entirely too heavy for our engines. They require a 5w30 and if you like your warranty(and fuel economy) it is a good idea to stick at least somewhat close to that.I suggest that anyone that is curious about oil should visit the forums at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com and read up!--Matt
I changed my oil for the 3rd time myself and changed from a M1 - 103 to the K&N hp1002 this thing is notacabley larger and fits just perfect. I did notice a drip on the filter anfter a test drive bringing her into lift 3 times. but i tighted it and drove again and no drips. i might not have put enough oil on the seal, but i might just have go to the correct size k&N from now on. oh yea Mobil 1 5w-30. I will check again in an hour to see if there are any leaks....

Hiya...I didn't notice any leaks with mine. I did, however have a bit of a mess. Every time I remove the filter, after draining the oil, I get major spillage out from around the filter so I'm cleaning up a lot around the edge of the pan near the filter and even the seat for the filter. I always get oil dumped on me. Just make sure you're not over tightening. I will hand-tighten up to about 3/4 turnpast the point it seats. I wouldn't think any less would be sufficient and much more than a full torn would be too tight. The K&N filter has worked like a champ for me. The engine seems a bit quieter and it overall more smooth through acceleration. I dunno but it sure was worth the 3x price over a regular filter though there seems to be a $3-$4 price difference locally. Worth the money though.Dave

It was late and thought this was the thread...Anywho, yeah, I use it, will probably use it exclusively. Also use Mobil 1 oil though bought 5 Quarts of Redline for my next oil change. That was nearly $8 a quart so I may not do that too often.Dave
cool... well i drove her to work today about 15 miles in the 110 degree weather then drove at around 80 on the freeway home in 98 degree weather, then i checked the filter again and did not see any drips or leaks...

Hello,I have the base engine and change my oil about every 3500-4000 miles. I use regular Mobil 5W-30 oil and Super Tech filters from Wal Mart. At $2 they are cheap, but are they OK? I figure that I change it enough that it isn't an issue. Any thoughts?

My Pontiac dealer had this Oil Change Club Card that gives you 10 oil/filter changes for $119.99. Certainly can't change your own oil at that price. On my 2004 Chrysler T&C they sold me a "service contract" that was ten oil changes for $100. Alternatively, it seems that someone (Goodyear, Procare etc.) is always running a $14.95 oil/filter change coupon. At 6,000 miles on the T&C I used a Goodyear oil change coupon that included a tire rotation all for $19.99.I'm convinced that oil changes every 3000-4000 miles with good quality fossil oil will be as good as Mobil 1 especially for the way I drive.

When I first changed the oil in my GT I used the best of everything as far as K&N filter and Mobil One syhthetic. changed the oil the second time and the oil was nasty and this was at just before 3000 mile interval. Also the valve train got a bit noisier on the Mobil one.Did alot of searching and decided to try Purolator Pure One filter and Castrol Syntec 0W30 Sythetic, the oil that it is imported from Germany and used specifically in Porchse's, Audi's etc.. I have had no porblems. Changed my intervals of changes to 6000 miles and the oil is half as dirty. Later

try taking a small center punch or philips screw driver and punch a hole in the filter before you take it off let it drain while you take the drain plug out then once it is done remove filter no mess to clean easy as 123
