Spare Tire Pressure Check

Post by RoundUp »

Just out of curiosity, does anyone check the pressure of their spare regularly? I check my tires at least once a month, but I only checked the spare today for the very first time. And it's a pain! Had to move everything out of the back, take the spare out and flip it over to do the check. I did this in my parking spot. Can't imagine doing this regularly at the gas station when I adjust the other tires.

I haven;t done it in my Vibe yet, but it is a good idea to do it periodically. Didn't check it on my last car, and I can testify that it really sucks to try to replace a flat tire with a flat spare. At least I still have a couple months of 1800ROADSID left.

Maybe you can just give it a squeeze or a bounce with a hammer every so often, to see if it's gone soft. Big rig drivers develop a good feel for how a rubber hammer (or even the toe of a boot) should bounce off their 18 plus tires...

Griot's Garage has is the answer to your problem:EASY ACCESS, SPARE TIRE AIR LINESpare tires that are remotely located should be checked periodically for correct tire pressure. Here's a way to conveniently check the pressure and fill the tire without even lifting the carpet! Connect our Spare Tire Airline to the spare tire's valve, and its long 42" length will extend into the trunk or luggage area. Use a tire gauge to check your correct pressure. If it's low, add air pressure as you normally would on the same end! No more useless, flat spares! Red hose for easy visibility. Indispensible for hard-to-reach spare tires. 44407 Spare Tire Air Line $9.95 http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp ... &SKU=44407

I was checking my tires today and figured I should check the spare too. Man, it is a pain in the (removed)! (Still in the 05!) You can't get to the spare air stem without taking the darn spare completely out.So I found this ancient thread. I'll have to check and see if that Air Line is still around.

I have no reason to check it's pressure, i carry an air pump in there, plus plugging tools to fix a flat so i don't even have to bother using the spare unless i totally destroy a tire.

Great price too.I also carry an air compressor; maybe I'm just a little over-cautious once having had a flat and finding my spare flat too. If it's easy to check I think it's worth it once in a while to make sure the spare is okay (hasn't gone totally flat.)

Nice job, zionzr2!I routed mine up to the hand-hole in the middle of the bumper side of the cargo floor. Probably not a very good description; maybe I'll get a pic too.
