p0171 new gasket doesn't help

Post by beetlebolt »

I recently bought a 2008 vibe with 144K but was getting only 25mpg. I replaced the intake manifold gasket with the orange one from toyota but was still sensing leakeage on the far right end of the manifold and now getting a p0171 error. I've now permatexed around the gasket and I think the leakage is now more local to the underside of the far right cylinder intake near where the manifold bolts to the block. I'm using carb cleaner to find leakage.
I guess I'll take the manifold off again and look for cracks.

Another symptom that came up after I replaced the gasket is my brake boost is gone and my idle is around 1000/800 which barely stays running most of the time.

Anyone have a similar experience?

Hmmm. I was leaving off the brake booster vacuum hose. Thats the little hose that attaches to the backside of the manifold. I should have counted and remembered there are 3 hoses connecting to the manifold.

beeltebolt: may I jump in with a question? I think I have to do the same thing to my Vibe. I don't know if the previous owner had the gasket changed. Can you see the side of the gasket when it is installed?
