2002 White Vibe

Post by ethelfaye »

My 2002 Vibe with 96,000 miles has started a squeaking noise when I drive slowly out of the drive. When I speed up on the highway, the sound seems to quit.

What do you think is wrong with my Vibe?

welcome to genvibe

hard to know from here, but maybe it's the brakes. Sometimes brakes squeak, and I've had them squeak only on just starting out after a night's rest. Or it could be the wear detector on the brake pads, designed to make a noise so you know it's getting time to have them replaced, but if that was the case then you'd probably also occasionally here it other times while braking. But that's just a guess.

some compulsive part of my personality forces me to say it, but the vibe's built in 2002 were part of the 2003 model year. Technically, there are no 2002 Vibes. Doesn't affect the squeak. ;)

Check your wheel bearings while you're at it!

I've never done that. Is there a procedure for checking wheel bearings?

I am unaware of a good SAFE procedure. For that reason I'll not be specific. I raise each wheel off the ground, one at a time, use a jack stand. Grab the wheel at 6 and12 clock positions. Try to wobble the bottom of wheel in-out, any noticeable play is A bad bearing or loose wheel, or ball joints. My other test is to spin-up each wheel, one at a time, and listen for bearing noise - works every time for me. CAUTION, SPINNING WHEELS ARE DANGEROUS. DO NOT SPIN FAST. KEEP ALL PEOPLE,KIDS,PETS, TOOLS, etc., AWAY. Safety first!
Any better ideas out there?

Sounds like a reasonably easy way to find a bad bearing or possible source of squeak. Won't have to spin the tires/wheels too fast to feel or hear if any one of them are the source of the problem.

This is like a Car Guys episode... too bad you can't try to replicate the squeak for us on line!!
