How do you remove the shift knob 2009 GT automatic?

Post by FootScoot »

I been thinking about changing the shift knob on my GT for awhile now, but haven't figured out whether it just unscrews, or is fixed on with some sort of trick engineering. Any help appreciated. TIA. :)

It unscrews. Turn it toward the steering wheel. It takes a while to get it all the way unscrewed.

Thanks J. They make it easy enough. The Beetle I had wasn't quite that simple. Thanks again. :)

You're very welcome ;)!

The Vibe's shift knob is a heck of a lot easier to remove then the ones on my former Pontiac Sunfires too. They had c-clips on the front of the shift knob (the side facing the front of the vehicle). In order to have enough room to pop the c-clip out of place, you would need to put the shifter in the lowest gear (all the way towards the rear seat), keep your foot on the brake and pop the c-clip out with a small flathead screwdriver all at the same time. And the c-clip never wanted to go back in all the way. I always ended up having to tap it back into place with a hammer :roll:.

Yeah, the Beetle had a steel band that held the shift boot and knob on the shifter. The only way to get it off was to cut the steel band with a Dremel and cutting wheel, and pull straight up, then you had to use a wire tie to reinstall, PITA. Typical German engineering, over complicated. :lol:

Yes, "lefty-loosey, righty-tighty". You can replace it much easier too as it does not have the "button "
Like I did : viewtopic.php?f=29&t=37119&p=462055&hilit" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
