Need help - wiring up Y adapter cable mini audio jack

Post by mikasa999 »

Hi, I new at this and trying out the aux mod that was posted by a fellow member on this http://forums.genvibe.com/zero...age=1 post. I am using a single DPDT switch instead of the relay and toggle switch. My problem is here is how to connect up the Y-cable adapter w/ (one end a mini phone plug) to the switch. On the other end of the cable is 2 main line that has 2 wire in it, one has a red in insulate and the other a white in insulate, both wrap with additional wire and together each set is wrap inside an insulate. Are those none red and white wire ground? I soldered the red and white wire to one of the set on the switch and cutting the remain wiring thinking it is gnd. i tested the sound out but it only work if the switch is activated for the cd, but when i connect the mini phone jack into a mp3 player, I get no sound. Can someone help me out and tell me how to wire the 2nd half up correctly. Thank you.

If I'm following what your saying, here's what I think you need to do. Completely around the Red and the white wire is "shielding" wire. This is the Ground wire. What I did, and think you need to do is attach these two grounds to the Radio case.If you follow this try it (and I understood you right) and let us know how it works.Namron

mikasa999, is there the possibility that the wires you tapped into are AFTER the amplifier? If so then when you throw the switch you are shutting off the amplified signal to the speakers and putting in your external device signal which does not have the power to drive the speakers. The shielding around both wires should be tied together and connected to ground at the radio itself. If not connected you will not get audio and if they are connected to a ground away from the radio you might end up with a ground loop problem causing noise. The easiest test you can do is to bypass all the wiring you have and use a set of test leads to connect your external source directly to the input side of the lines you tapped in the stereo. One lead for left channel, one for right channel and one lead to tie both shields to ground at the radio. If you get good audio then you know you have the right wires in the stereo and the problem is in your wiring to the switch, if not then you may have to reconnect those stereo wires and look for wires before the amplifier.
