Hot air only coming out of vents.

Post by timsdiecast »

Forgive me if this question has been asked before, but I recently bought a 2003 AWD Vibe, and the A/C works fine, but when the A/C isn't on hot air comes out of the vents like the heat is on even though I have the temperture knob turned all the way over to cold. Any ideas? I've been told two different things. There's a damper door or flapper that isn't working properly, and I've also been told there's a module that controls the damper door that goes bad. Anybody else ever have this problem, and what do you guys and gals suggest?

welcome to genvibe

The temperature control is all mechanical. Rotating the dial moves a cable that operates a flap in the HVAC stack, controlling how much air passes through the heater core. Some of us have had problems where that cable needs to be adjusted, which is discussed in

If you are just getting full heat, then maybe that cable is broken or disconnected somewhere

for the heat control, there is no module. Some fancier cars have valves that switch off coolant flow through the heater core when the temperature is set to cold, but not on these. WE get full heat coolant flowing through the heater core all the time, and can only control whether air is routed through it or not.
