Small Sub

Post by drewdads »

Hello all,I'm looking around trying to find a powered sub that would fit under one of the front seats. I really don't want a sub in the back of the car do to the fact that I need to regually use the space. It started as a basic radio system (non-monsoon) but, I've added a new head unit (kenwood kdc-994) and 4 new speakers (Infinity Kappa 63.9i). I would like to have more bottom end to help fill in the sound. Not looking to rattel the fillings out of my teeth or anything. Just a nice listening sound inside of the car. I know this topic has probably been beaten to death on this forum but, I can't really find anything that really addresses this question. Thanks,Andy

I am not a audio gurro in any way, but I just asked my local sound shop about doing some thing similar and he told me I would basicly be wasting my time. The gains I would get would be minimal at best for what I am working with. He was more than willing to set my up for around $175, but warned me again the gain may not be worth the cost. I have a Jensen 9424BT, alpine mrv-f250 V12 amp and am still shopping for some decent 6.5 speakers. The factory speakers are still in for the next week or so, but the ohm resistance is so diffrent I can barley turn up the sound before my amp goes into protection mode.

I have a JVC CS-BB2 under the drivers seat.Had to flip the cars stock ac inverter around and raise it up a few mm with some washers. But after that the sub fits nicely and doesn't take up a lot of room.I wanted some more low end but giving up trunk space was not an option. The sounds is just what I was looking for, compliments my polk components very well. It does distort easily if turned up high but my headunit has a LPF and allows the sub to be dialed down as much as I want. Did not like it at first until I found these settings.

What if I were to get the monsoon sub. amp. and housing from a junk yard and put that in. Would that work with my aftermarket radio?

Here's my setup. It's a Kenwood powered sub. I bought it around the time I bought my car 8 years ago. I think it's been discontinued. I've enjoyed it though. I was looking for the same thing you were, something to fill out the lows. It wouldn't fit under the front seat and I also had some concerns about ventilation. As far as cargo space, it hasn't been an issue. Sure you may have an issue when carrying something huge that needs all the space you can get, but I've always been able to work around it. There's tons of options on powered subs. As for putting in an original Pontiac sub, you'd probably have to run some power and speaker wires to the area if you didn't have it before. I don't think the '03's had that option yet, so I don't know. I've never been a fan of subs that overpower every other aspect of your music, so a powered sub was good enough for me. I definitely notice a difference with and without it. Keep doing some research, cause if you thought about it, chances are someone else out there has done it already.

Very nice! That takes up zero cargo space. I recently received the new Crutchfeild mag & saw saw a 6" sub that was shaped like a normal speaker. Im sure the bass isnt earth shattering but i guess it depends on your listening preference.

Ya, that's the new model of the Kenwood I bought years ago. Looks like the changed the look a little, but the remote is the exact same. It looks like the specs are the same except for the speaker dimensions. My old one is two 6 1/2" speakers and the new model is two 5" x 7" speakers. I bet they did that to utilize the most space. Here's my old one. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-m....html Andy, I would totally recommend it if you're looking for something to fill out your sound system. I use the frequency controls to have it handle most of the lows and leave my Infinity speakers upfront to handle the mids and highs. Here's the Infinity speakers I put in when I bought the sub and also put in some cheaper Pioneer speakers in the rear doors. They have some tweeters built in that you can aim. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Z....html I drilled some holes in the plastic on the back of the seat and put in those plastic inserts that expand and lock when you put in the screw. Retainers? Can't remember the term. I put a neoprene heat resistent foam pad behind the sub and screwed in the brackets and sub. Ran the power, cables, and remote down behind the seat, along the door jam, and under the carpet to the stereo. As you can see, it doesn't take up much space. It does exactly what I was looking for. Never had any problems with it either. It's been through many Oklahoma summers and winters, which go to the extremes at times. It's durable, sounds good, and just works. If you have any questions on that Kenwood sub, just ask. As far as I can tell, it's the same one I have, other than the speaker shape.
