Intake Manifold problems due to DEXCOOL antifreeze.

Post by Vibemann »

Has there been a lot of problems with the DEXCOOL antifreeze used on VIBES or GM Vechicles in general? I heard somewhere that intake manifold gaskets were deteiorating from the DEXCOOL antifreeze. I recently bought a used 2008 VIBE. I wonder what coolent TOYOTA uses for the Matrix?

I didn't read anything about intake gaskets but i did have a 94 blazer that had a dexcool problem that clogged my 1994 blazer heater core. when I changed my rad fluid in the vibe the local pontiac dealer changed it to prestone.

I have a 1999 Astro and there has not been any DEXCOOL or cooling system problems. I heard once that the problem that the problems related to DEXCOOL were from topping off with tap water don't know if it is true or not but I have never added tap water and had no problems.I think that Vibes left the factory with Toyota antifreeze even though the manual sayes DEXCOOL, my 2006 came with pink antifreeze not orange.

I have no idea how this would effect Vibes (or Toyotas), but it wasn't strictly a Dexcool problem. Certain V6 GM engines in the late 1990s and early 2000s used an intake manifold seal made out of a material that Dexcool would eventually erode away, resulting in a leak. I believe it was only the rear intake manifold seal (not sure). I had a 1998 Pontiac Montana that had this problem. I never saw any actual leak, but I could smell coolant, and the recovery tank would get low so that I had to top it off regularly. I eventually got it fixed (expensive!!!). There was a class-action lawsuit about this, but nothing ever came of it AFAIK.I think this was just a GM parts issue, not applicable to our Vibes.

at the throttle body it works like a "hot plate" to warn the intake . I had 3.8L GM. The intake went . But that is strictly a HEAT issue at the EGR pipe. But everyone likes to blame something new as the cause. I can say 1st hand Dexcool in the early years turned to brown goopy blobs if you mixed the green coolants with it. They may have changed the formula since GM had the law suit..they settled.
