GenVibe Indy meet mileage mpg numbers!

Post by tpollauf »

Ok guys, call me crazy or whatever, BUT I just had to put my 2009 Vibe GT to the test as far as what would give me the BEST mileage. Below is an actual snapshot of my dash, at the gas station, early this morning when I got back to Toledo (3:30 am ) and I was shocked to see such impressive numbers. These numbers are from Dayton to Toledo driving between 55 & 60 down I-75 (Yeah I was being passed up by EVERYBODY) and the A/C off. Winds were calm, flat road surface, & 75 degree outdoor temperature. The scangauge calculated an impressive 41.7 mpg (which I knew was a bit high) BUT the actual numbers were this: 166.1 miles/4.3 gal= 38.6 mpg Very impressive numbers for the 2.4L engine. On a negative note, it added close to a full hour of drive time to get home The trip out there was a bit different but still good numbers. The A'C was on & drove 65 - 70 most of the trip. On that tank it went 344 miles/10.5 gal= 32.8 mpg

Sounds awesome, carrie and tim texted me some good numbers too and I am sure they will post. I was only at 28-29 mpg for the way down, but we were using the AC. Such is life. My mpgs have been a bit lower lately, probably due to AC use.

Yeah, mileage probably drops off a bit when your husband is hanging on for dear life perched on the hood using the 'steadycam' to shoot video through the windshield of you driving!

My 2003 Vibe Base Auto 2-tone Salsa "SalsaWagon" was built in May 2002. I acquired it in Feb 2004/Traded it in on a 2016 Honda HR-V in Feb 2018.

(removed)!!Nice numbers Tim!!I guess my mileage is a lil better then I expected, I thought I was closer to the 29-31mpg. Calculated up when I got home and I nailed 39.2 MPG driving 75 through Indy and 70 through IL with the AC on!

I had the windows down the whole time and was doing 60 all the way down Route 47 and than anywhere between 70 and 80 on I 74 (thanks Tim & Michelle!) .Quote, originally posted by kostby »Yeah, mileage probably drops off a bit when your husband is hanging on for dear life perched on the hood using the 'steadycam' to shoot video through the windshield of you driving! I am going to go get gas later so I can figure it out and I will post what I got.

Interesting comparison between Carrie and myself on the way there, her getting 31.2 and me getting 28.5 mpg... same speeds (95% of the time) and same road and same conditions, but I had the AC on (very lowest setting)... proves how much of a difference that makes! Personally, the extra $$$ in the gas tank is worth the temperature for me, and also worth being able to hear my music and see out the windshield (my hair gets in my face really bad with the windows down on the highway and I can't see anything). To me, if I *really* cared about MPGs, I would have gotten a much smaller car. It's more like an added bonus.I am curious what pressure the other 2.4Ls are running their tires at... I think mine are at the factory minimums which might make a difference if everyone else is higher.PS Awesome signature BlueCrush!!

...the factory spec's for my 2009 base Vibe with Goodyear 'Eagle' RS-A 205/55/R16's is 32 psi, but I keep them at 40 psi for better fuel economy at the expense of slightly "stiffer/bumpier" ride.

I got 32.1 on the way up to Indy, and 32.8 on the way home. TP at 32psi all around, avg speed about 72mph (72 on the way back - there was some slow traffic around Indy on the way up). A/C on both ways. The mileage on this car is great - lots better than I expected (always over 30mpg on the highway, usually around 32, once just over 35 on an all-tank drive a couple weeks ago).

Ok, then either my car has some issues or I don't drive as consistently as I think I do! This current tank of gas is going to be 28mpg or less (I'm close to empty and not quite at 300mi) when I go fill it up. All of my mpgs have been 3mpg lower than they used to be (started *before* I put on the intake if I remember correctly...)

I got 31.4 on the way down to the meet and I got about 34 on the way back up. I had the cruise control set at about 80MPH on the way back. I made it back to Chicago in just under 2.5 hours.

I got 37.5 on the way up with the A/C at full blast, cruise control set at 75mph. Got the exact same thing on the way back, same conditions. I have a serious weight advantage over you guys though.

On the way home, I got 33.7. I was hoping to beat my personal best of 33.9, but 33.7 is still really good in my opinion, especially for the 2.4L.You guys got some impressive numbers for sure !

After what I pulled off, I will likely NEVER beat my best (38.6 mpg) as it was a bit uncomfortable driving with the A/C off, and EVERYBODY passing me by I had to prove a point... and I did

I had no problem driving without the AC both Friday and yesterday, except for the fact that I looked like Medusa because my hair was flying all over the place . On Friday I kept getting passed by these two Vibes. It was the strangest thing . Yesterday there wasn't too much traffic on the road, but I was getting passed left and right as well. It was funny though because it seemed to mostly be bigger SUVs. I would laugh to myself and think, "Go ahead and pass me. Doing so you're probably burning up a whole gallon of gas !"Yeah, 38.6 is awesome Tim ! You definitely did prove a point! I am very happy with my personal best of 33.9 since I never even saw numbers close to that with my Sunfires and they had a pretty good weight advantage over the Vibe.By the way, it was great getting to meet you in person Tim . I sold my mom on the third brake light ! So, you can definitely put me down for 2 if and when you decide to mass produce them. I bet your wife was relieved that you arrived home unharmed !Oh... and I your new sig! Hysterical !

Well I went and bought some decent gas (BP) rather than the cheap gas, and put some fuel injector cleaner in (it never had, and I usually use crappy gas)... this is going to be a scientific method to see if anything will improve my mileage at all. Next I will try using no A/C for a whole tank, and then I will try upping my tire pressure a little bit for a whole tank. I'll try to keep type and style of driving consistent.Official numbers from my last tank was 27.9, which including driving back from Indy (some torrential rain for about 20 min, and several spots of bad traffic, otherwise cruise control) and driving to and from Cary, IL to O'hare to drop off some friends (cruise control as much as possible). And I am totally buying a third brake light... I just want mine to say Pontiac.

And if we're out of town, we try as much as possible to only get gas at Citgo. To even further keep things consistent, since the Citgo we go to at home has 89 octane for the lowest grade, rather than 87 like 99% of the other gas stations, we pop for the extra money and get the 89 (which is usually mid grade everywhere else). Since the gas station that Tim and I went to after Buca turned out to not be a Citgo, I waited and got gas about 30 miles from the hotel in Brownsburg (right off of I 74). The 89 octane (mid grade there) was $2.84 a gallon compared to when I got gas at the local Citgo where 89 is the lowest grade and it was $2.69, but as I said, it's well worth it to me to keep the octane and "brand" consistent. We have never had any problems with using gas from Citgo.
