Oil Question

Post by RedRocket »

We got our first Pontiac Vibe last month,a 2004 model with the 1.8L engine that holds 3.9qts of oil..Love the little car so far..Gets awesome gas mileage..Question is, will putting 4qts in it hurt it? Because I went over while changing it and put 4qts in it.I was trying to watch it,but it went over just a tad..And another question, is the 5w-30 really the best for it? Or would 10w-30 be better? I've always used 10w-30 in all my other vehicles, but wonder if it might be hard on the engine and the oil pump with the engine being so small and the 30 wieght oil being thicker..

I wouldn't sweat the tiny little bit of extra, no biggie. The weight, use what they recommend on the oil cap, 5w20. The engines are built to a very close tolerance and the thinner oil presents less friction which in turn presents better mpg's.Dave

Yep, what he said ^^^^^ I actually meant 30 but brain didn't communicate effectively with fingers! Also when working on memory (which is fading) the multiple vehicles I service get muddled together!! Getting old sucks!
