Gearshift position on 2009 1.8L 4 speed automatic

Post by jake75 »

I read the manual but I am still confused. When in "Drive -3" the shift lever can move right - left. Does that make any difference?

The purpose of the movement is to upshift or downshift manually. Allows you control of when to shift rather than the computer which has preset points. lets you stretch out a gear or downshift to use the tranny and engine to help you slow down.

the 1.8 auto I dont think it has the "manual" shift mode, thought only the GT did. If there is no - + next to it it is not a manual shift part. it is just the way the shift area is laid out as its wide so you can move down to 2 and L see its just a wide area, its so you cant shift into N from D with out moving it to the right and up. Must just be extra room in there to jiggle it left and right.

You have lower speeds available when going up steep inclines or other situations. 3 is 3rd, 2 is 2nd. D and 3 are not the same thing. Your transmission is a 4 speed.

They got rid of the O/D OFF button for '09, right? So am I looking at it right by saying pushing it to the far left position keeps it in 3rd and locks out overdrive (similar to pressing the O/D off button on the older Vibes) and all the way right allows it to go into 4th gear?
