AND it would have been safer... No the smart holds no love here, now, if I was in London or someplace like that sure, but over here, not so much.. Just my loley opinion though... hope you like it..

What's the big brother? A Gary Fisher mountain bike? BWAHAHAHA. sorry I couldn't resist.I just never saw the reason for these cars, they are not very safe on the highway against bigger cars and trucks, they are not very quick for passing or getting up to highway speeds, not that you would be passing a lot. Cannot travel in weather, i.e. snow. I dunno, just seems not worth the mileage savings. You could take any car that is on the road today, slow your speed down, drive more cautious and decelerate more than brake and go (read: anticipate when traffic is slowing down and let off the gas). And use your cruise control more often and save a good 20% at least on fuel costs. My Matrix XR AWD typically pulls in 25-27mpg average between city and highway. When we had $4 gas and it cost me $45 to fillup I was driving a lot more cautious and slow (65 max). I was saving myself good money and getting 30-32mpg.

I'm sure they have no problems with American dollars.

The 2008 smart fortwo achieved the highest ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for front and side crashworthiness. We encourage you to see for yourself how the smart performed in the tests conducted by the IIHS by visiting http://www.iihs.org.

My mom's 1989 Ford Crown Vic Country Squire LTD wagon also had good ratings, it was a tank.

I can't imagine any company in their right mind advertising like that. It doesn't make any sense, especially in trying to appeal to the american market. I say its phony.

I agree on the photoshopping...the edge of the "ad" goes downhill compared to the billboard itself.I can't imagine that would do a very good job of selling cars anywhere in America.

Did some searching...The billboard appeared in South Africa back in 2006:http://www.leftlanenews.com/ch....htmlQuote »The Chrysler Group — the American wing of the DaimlerChrysler organization — was not too happy when images began circulating on the Internet of a billboard on South Africa for DaimlerChrysler’s Smart ForFour...http://jalopnik.com/182368/som...boardQuote »We actually thought the "German engineering, Swiss innovation, American nothing" billboards in South Africa were pretty ballsy and clever. Chrysler's Jason Vines doesn't think so, and apparently neither did some other PR types at DCX. The billboards are now toast. The ad agency said the "nothing" crack referred to the car's diminutive size, rather than the perception that America sucks. The billboard pic in both links looks like it was taken outside, no photoshopping.

These crash test ratings are all well and good, but consider this... WHAT has to be done to such a small car to achieve this rating? Crumple zones are almost non-existent, there isn't enough room... so where does the energy go? my guess would be into the passengers.. Same for side impact... Is this thing as safe as they say it is, I mean considering having a largish SUV barreling down on you... Did they smash 2 smarts together and call it good?? I could see it being really safe in europe, where most of the cars ARE that small, but here, with that soccer mom, driving the suburban, on the cell, with the kids screaming in the back, not paying anyone a bit of attention.. no thanks, that's a scary thought..

Congrats on the new ride, I bet it's an experience breaking from convention and driving something so unique. As far as safety goes, at least it fared better than my significantly larger and 700-pounds heavier Hyundai Accent did in the IIHS tests. Just watch out for the soccer moms and you'll be alright. I'd love to have one of those things if I were a creature of the city. Not so sure about high speed interstate travel though. I kinda like them but from a practicality standpoint it wouldn't work out too well. What the South African billboard said didn't really surprise me, you know how well people like us in other parts of the world! It certanily couldn't be an American billboard, we don't even have the ForFour here.

again this car is made for city and residential driving. I'm not sure its recommended for highway driving.... Think of your daily commute to work, my max speed is 40mph. this is a perfect example of a daily commuter car then you have another car for your other tasks and highway driving.
