transmission whine

Post by jak219 »

Anyone have a whiny transmission? Mine (2008) makes a high pitched whine that follows the engine speed. It is starting to bug me.

from the pic jak posted in http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=34097 I see he has an auto tranny ( http://forums.genvibe.com/zero...n.JPG )jak, you say it's a tranny whine, but follows the engine speed. What makes you think it's the transmission?

Yeah, it's an automatic. If I put it in neutral, and increase RPMs, the sound is not there. That's why I think it's the transmission. It sounds kind of like when you rub something against the outside of a sleeping bag or backpack or ski jacket. But it is continuous. Like one of those old wind sound effect machines where there's a rotating drum rubbing against a piece of material (http://www.ruyasonic.com/sfx_make.htm). It's not loud, but it's noticeable.

I know what you mean. It's the computer. Not the transmission. It's a very high pitched whine right? It's the computer making the noise. For some strange reason.

nah... the computer? Any idea how/why the computer would make noise like that?

just out of curiosity what tires are on there? ill check on alldata at school tomorrow I dont see how it could be the ECU being how they do not have fans in them. its just a circuit board in there. sounds like you have single chain gears which i applaud (the double chain final drive gears on automatic transmissions are much quiter than single chains due to the chains 180* off set allowing noise cancelation, single chains are 10 times stronger). id like some video of this condition to make a more educated deduction.

It's like a whirring, whining sound if i'm not mistaken. I know exactly what you mean, but it sounds like it's coming directly from the ECU. I'm probably wrong, but that's the general area from where the noise is originating.

does the car have a fenderwell intake? they tend to make alot of noise when driving. the sucking sound in the fenderwell gets magnified alot in any car/application.
