I bought some new speakers for my '09 and found out the stock speakers are held in by rivets (what's wrong with screws??). Is there a special way to get them out or do I just need to get a drill and go to town? Thanks!

Yup, just drill them out. For the front you will need to use the plastic mounts or the window won't shut (No issue in the back though). Just shred the factory speakers and use a pair of snips to cut the plastic parts in the back holding the speaker in.

I got one of the front speakers replaced. Not sure what you mean by using plastic mounts. The whole speaker came out, I just had to drill some new mounting holes for the bracket. Window works fine.

Some speakers are too deep to mount in the stock locations without using a bracket or re-use the existing bracket from the vibe which brings the speaker closer to the interior side of the door panel. Too deep a speaker will block the window from going all the way down.
Thanks for the posts - you guys saved me a ton of work. I never would have thought to reuse the old speakers as "brackets" for the new ones. What I did was leave the stock speakers riveted in place and just cut out the speaker part, then I screwed the new speakers to the old ones. Worked great. I think I installed the last three speakers in less time then in took me to get the first one put in.

I didn't drill mine, the rivet was so soft that I just used a pair of nippers to cut it off then reach back behind and grab the other half.
