Why couldn't you go to the Epic Meet?

Post by BlueCrush »

I wasn't able to go from the start since I had no available vacation time to take even one day off.Why couldn't you go? Pick one of the selections or add your own. What could be done differently to make the next Epic Meet more successful?

It was a shame that gas shot up more than a $1 a gallon since the meet was first planned. Add that to the tolls and hotel costs, and I just could not justify the expense when the economy and job security are so perilous these days.

1900 miles and not enough time off. I am going to Hawaii for my brother's wedding in September and I have a family reunion between Christmas and New Years. At 2 wks a year, just not enough time for me to also go to the epic.

From my perspective, what would have made it more successful (as far as my ability to be there) was for it not to be a 3 day drive. Seriously, though. Timing just didn't work for me to commit to such a long trip. Maybe at some point I'd be able to.

I voted for just having a baby and couldn't afford to do it... I really wanted to go, and originally planned on doing a mini vacation with the wife and one child, but then I got the news we were expanding the family, so I really couldn't have brought a 3 week old with us...

From past experience, it seems like any time there are 40 people signed up for a meet about 15 show up. It's sad, but it's the truth. We opted out because it was our first anniversary and we wanted to go elsewhere.I wasn't sure from the beginning that it was going to be as "epic" as was thought...guess I'm just jaded from going to the MI meet after the "big" one with about 30 cars and GM there to give away prizes...and the next year we had very few people there, and the dealership did squat for us.

I'm going to keep my comments short and to the point, as not to get banned. The meet got started planning very close to a year in advance. Everyone had plenty of time to save a few bucks a week for gas money. So those who are using gas as your reason... Thats not valid. The 20-40extra bucks it would have cost, if you had to fill your tank 8times would have only been a few dollars.I personally filled my tank almost 5 times. Shame on those who signed up, then never bothered to follow threw.I drove over 600miles one way to make the meet. So I don't want to hear it. My father raised me to be a "man of his word" And that I was. I am sorry to say this but most genviber's who commit to doing something usually back out of it... why do you think there aren't any group buys?We had over 40 people sign up for an "epic" meet and 13 showed... I consider that a HUGE FAIL.To those who actually made the trip out, I COMMEND YOU! And THANK YOU!I suggest if someone wants to plan another "Car" meet to plan it in a town you can drive around in HAHAHA. To drive 1mile took like 30mins, thats just plan nuts!I attended to show my support of my fellow members and car lovers. However those who backed out, for what ever reason, I know where you stand now. This "epic" fail has left a very bad taste in my mouth. I have said what i needed to say... flame me if you must but I will not respond to any of them.Again Thank you for showing your support, for those who took the time to plan and show up. Thank you to Kevin, Mike, Joe for starting and finishing something. Thank you guys. I consider you guys truly good friends.

^^^^^^^ Agree 100% ^^^^^^^I had no vaction time to use. I took 2 days off without pay. So I lost money there. The gas money, I saved up through change from when I first said I would go. I had to make a stop on the way to the meet and spend some money to fix a chip I got in the windshield. All in all, when I got back, I was broke and in the hole. But it was all worth it to see some friends and enjoy time with others who share a passion through a car called a Vibe.
Bye Bye Vibe.............

Quote, originally posted by keithvibe »The meet got started planning very close to a year in advance. IMHO that is what did the attendance in. The headcount was taken too soon. Things can change a LOT for people in a year's time. Not to mention the ones that possibly just forgot about it or may no longer be as active on the site. The money situation in this country for a lot of people has changed a LOT in the past year, and not just because of gas. People who thought they would have the money a year ago might not now -- and not everyone wishes to go into debt over a Vibe meet. Let's not crucify them for making that decision, if that was how the cookie crumbled. It's great that there is a group that is that devoted -- but to expect every single person (or even a majority) on a list that was taken so far in advance to show up was simply unrealistic. The more realistic comparison would be to compare your "confirmed" list from a few weeks ago to those who attended. Most people can't truly commit to things like this more than a few weeks or a couple of months in advance. They tell you when you send out wedding or party invites (which are sent out 1-2 months in advance) to expect a 50% positive response rate...and for some of the people who RSVP with a "yes" to not show up...I would look at a meet to be about the same.

I know with my comments I may tick off a few of you and may even lose a few as friends. But, it is what I felt and I needed to say. If you don't like it... tough noogies I have already had a few IM me with comments good and bad.. but you know what, last I checked, freedom of speech was still in effect.I hear enough BS from my government, didn't think I would hear it here too.

Gee. What a bad attitude. Like Kari said, a lot of things can happen in a year to affect somebodies ability to attend. Get over it.I didn't sign up. It would have been 2,900 give or take a few hundred miles for me to go one way according to google maps. It would have ended up costing me almost $800 for gas.Perhaps west coast and east coast members can have their own seperate meets next time. I would drive 1000 miles one way to meet, but I won't drive 3000 miles one way. I only did that when I drove truck.

I tell you, as people started backing out, and my school bills got higher and higher along with gas, electric, rent, etc... I thought about backing out. BUT I felt that since I had signed up, I wanted to follow thru. I really wanted the chance to see other GenVibers in person, park next to some rad Vibes and get some nifty ideas (damn those red grounding cables!!!) Truthfully, had it been at the other location initially offered, I wouldn't have signed up. i would have waited until closer to the meet to decide altogether,That said, I'm in a different place than most. I have a stable job, expendible cashflow, no kids, no house, etc. Heck, I had a college class that ended on July 28th and I told my teacher when I started the class I'd miss the final because of a 'business trip', could I possibly take it early? Turns out they let me skip it altogether because my other grades were all As. Not everyone gets those breaks, so I would have felt lousy backing out. That's just me!! Your mileage may vary, and I understand why the people who worked so hard to organize it feel slighted. I thank you guys for the hand-holding too, I was completely out of my element and it was a great comfort to have such awesome people tell me where to go and what to do lolz!

I never thought I could go, and if I had committed to go I would have had to cancel for higher priority personal matters. I know how I react to things, and honestly, if I had invested the time and money to attend only to find most people were no shows, I'd be bitter. I would have had jets of steam shooting out both ears all the way home.So for those that atteneded and thought it was worth the triop, that's great. For those that atteneded and are disappointed, I can certainly understand, and we're adults enough that you should be free to talk about that frustration. Maybe the wide area "epic" meet just isn't a viable concept for genvibers

It is sad that more people didn't show up. However, plans do change. maybe they forgot to update everyone here if they were going or not. It's not really that big a deal. Life is too short to be bitter because someone didn't show up. Being a little disappointed? Yes. But bitter and upset? No.Berating people because they didn't come is really going to alienate them and they will not want to consider another meet. The people who showed up should have enjoyed themselves, then told everyone what they missed. And said how much they were missed.I couldn't come. Too far and wrong timing for me. However, that doesn't mean I wouldn't have liked to come.Lighten up.
