I don't have problems...make sure you start accelerating before you get to the hill...that momentum help keep you going...You could also disable the O/D to get a little more power...I do that a lot, and have yet to see any major impacts on fuel economy as a result of it...

I sort of have the same issue, I think it is lack of HP but I'm no tech guy, I usually get a nice speeding start and give it all I can, I make it but yeah it is a bit sluggish, much better than my old nissan pickup with 32" tires.

I've got a base vibe with auto transmission. On long hills it will downshift to keep up to the speed set with my cruise control. If you've got a manual transmission, try downshifting a gear. The higher the engine revs the more horsepower and torque it has. The Vibe hasn't got a low wind resistance number, and it weighs more than smaller (shorter) cars, so keeping the engine in it's "economy" high gear means it's not going to be very good at hill climbing.So Downshift. Let the engine have some higher revs.KSNeptune

I downshift and disable the O/D all the time. Basically I only do it to get that "running start" then I throw it back to O/D to get that last push. That's when that low end grunt kicks in. I'm floating by then......

I cann't believe a car person like you can not drive a stick.... I made my gfriend learn to drive a stick cause I was sick of driving a manual trans............. How boring..... And she is starting to like it after about 4 months.Oh ya the power thing no sugestions other than those posted... Cause I drive GT

Anyone could learn to drive a stick in a few hours or less. When I picked up my GT I had only driven a stick twice in my life and it was over 6 years ago. I stalled it a few times but by the time I got home (1/2 hour later) I was doing great. A lot of people are saying they got the base so they could put the supercharger in it. I'd like to see how many actually do it once it comes out.

The only time you need to put the car in neutral is if you want to let your foot off the clutch or get out of the car with the engine still running. I'll do it sometimes if I'm sitting through a long light just so I don't need to be holding the clutch in (just put in in N and let the pedal out).

No sir. The clutch is the link between the engine (turning) and the wheels (not turning in this case). The clutch in a manual transmission seperates the two and allows the engine to keep running while the wheels are at rest, or engages the two and starts the wheels turning through the gears in the transmission.http://auto.howstuffworks.com/clutch1.htm

Holding your foot down on the clutch disengages it, so the flywheel is spinning freely; when you let go it engages and the power goes to the trans. It is actually better for the car to keep it in neutral at a stoplight then hold your foot on the clutch because it's not good for the cluth mechanism to keep it spinning like that. Driving a stick is very easy. Shouldn't take anyone more than a few hours to get it down. I learned on a stick. As for losing power, it's a 4 banger. Unless you have a little HP under the hood (Like the GT), they will die up hills and you will have to rev it. The base Vibe shoudnt have too much trouble with 130HP.I'm still willing to bet $$ on my GT with it's current mods vs a S/C base. Any takers?

definitely a GT will beat a base with supercharger. Maybe itll have some trouble with a base with stick tho...I have a few mods tho so i'm safe

Regarding the up-hill thing, it's not hp that's the prob, its the RPM that the HP is available. I'll bet you guys with GT's struggle to go up a steep hill in 6th at say, 80 kmh as this will put you around, what... 2500 rpm? The issue is that even though we have 130 and 180 hp, it does not come on until relatively high rpm. Peak power (for base) is around 4-5000 rpm while I turn around 3000 or slightly less on the highway probably giving me less than 80 hp available. I downshift, get into the powerband, and off we go... no probs. For auto's you'll probably have to floor it or get out of OD or something but, as long as your car is turning over 4000 rpm, you should be just fine! Please note, these rpm and HP numbers are a rough estimate. Check out a dyno chart and you'll see where your power comes on.Regarding the Supercharger vs. GT... I'm willing to bet in all normal driving circumstances, the supercharged base will take a GT. Here's my rational. The SC adds a whole lotta torque at low rpm thus giving the base ample power immediately while the GT guy has to drop several gears or get an AMAZING launch. Where the GT will most likely shine is top end / top speed as the GT has a bit more HP. 'Round town... my money's on a SC Base. This is what I'd suggest happens:0-60 SC Base1/4 close but I'll take the SC Base maybe the pros will launch better than the average guy (like me!) but the SC will have the edgeAnything more than 1/4... I'd have to say GT.Sigh, I'm not supercharging my car so this is all moot to me. You guys who are actually DOING something, please let me know how it turns out!

The key when hill climbing is to not be afraid of the downshift. You have to keep these engines turning! It was the hardest thing for me to get used to, having previously driven engines where the torque is greater at lower rpm's. For some reason my 12 year old daughter thinks its really exciting when I downshift on a hill, especially if I'm passing a slow-poke. lol
