Mid Spoiler "Butcher Job"

A person I know who works at a Pontiac dealership said that in order to install the mid spoiler, the installer has to drill a bunch of holes in the tailgate. These holes end up with bare metal edges on them. So the tailgate then has to be re painted to prevent rust. He said that all in all, it is not a good idea to drill holes in a car, but this is the only way to hold the mid spoiler on the car because adhesives aren't strong enough to support it.

I would think they would have designed the spoiler to be attached without annihilating the tailgate...

Anyone who would drill a hole anywhere in the metal of a car is a butcher.

Butcher? I don't think so.All you have to do is paint the edges of the newly drilled holes to seal the metal at that point. You do NOT have to repaint the hole darned hatch unless you REALLY screw things up (drop the drill prehaps?).I drilled holes in the trunk lid of my Civic when it was 3 days old to mount a prepainted factory spoiler. The dealer wanted $800 for the spoiler installed - I got them down to $400 uninstalled. $400 for 1/2 hours work - I don't think so unless I'm the one getting paid instead of the one paying. Had my Honda for 9.5 years and never had a single problem - here's hope this Vibe does as well.

Where I live they pour the salt to the roads, so any hatchet job is an invitation to rust, and rust it will. Touching up the paint isn't nearly the same as a factory paint job, with 'E' Coat and primer under the paint.

I used to work at Target...they have massive cardboard balers in the back...they crush hundreds and hundred and hundreds of boxes into a cube about 8 by 8 by 8...give or take...and they use a heavy steel wire to bind it all together and send it off for recycling...aka bailing wire.

BTW, anyone know how to install safely a spoiler without drilling sone hole to bolt it on the car? From my part, I don't know how. Every single spoiler needs holes to be installed.

the spoiler from apc for the matrix comes with 3m tape but i wouldnt trust it.besides i didint think you could just buy the peices minus installation. i would diy it anyway... im horrible with paint and sealer and stuff. the body kit and spoilers is a job id leave to the dealers.most of them know what they are doing.

To do the right install, you HAVE to drill holes for a spoiler. You could put it on with tape, but then you'd be picking it up off the road in the future. As was said, all you need to do is touch up the bare metal from the drill. If it's like most spoilers, theres a rubber seating gasket that goes around the base of the spoilers, so no water will get in there anyway.
