A person I know who works at a Pontiac dealership said that in order to install the mid spoiler, the installer has to drill a bunch of holes in the tailgate. These holes end up with bare metal edges on them. So the tailgate then has to be re painted to prevent rust. He said that all in all, it is not a good idea to drill holes in a car, but this is the only way to hold the mid spoiler on the car because adhesives aren't strong enough to support it.
Butcher? I don't think so.All you have to do is paint the edges of the newly drilled holes to seal the metal at that point. You do NOT have to repaint the hole darned hatch unless you REALLY screw things up (drop the drill prehaps?).I drilled holes in the trunk lid of my Civic when it was 3 days old to mount a prepainted factory spoiler. The dealer wanted $800 for the spoiler installed - I got them down to $400 uninstalled. $400 for 1/2 hours work - I don't think so unless I'm the one getting paid instead of the one paying. Had my Honda for 9.5 years and never had a single problem - here's hope this Vibe does as well.
Where I live they pour the salt to the roads, so any hatchet job is an invitation to rust, and rust it will. Touching up the paint isn't nearly the same as a factory paint job, with 'E' Coat and primer under the paint.

It's not held on with tape or magnets or bailing wire?!quote:These holes end up with bare metal edges on them. So the tailgate then has to be re painted to prevent rust. You don't have to repaint the whole tailgate all you have to do is paint around the new holes with touchup paint. The spoiler will cover the holes so teh touchpaint doen't have to be perfect. It just has to cover the bare metal.quote:He said that all in all, it is not a good idea to drill holes in a carReally? Does he know there are holes drilled in every Vibe to hold on the fenders and doors and roofrack and .........
quote:What?! It's not held on with bailing wire?! .........All I can say is you are a city slicker.....Twine from where I come from. Perhaps, but depending on what you tieing up. I use baling wire to tie bales of cardboard for recycling. I doubt twine would hold 1100lbs of cardboard.
Would you agree to debris acceptance? 2003 Vibe GTMods installed GM Top and Mid-Gate Spoilers, Cosmo CAI, TWM Short Shifter with Desert Eagle weighted shift knob, TWM Bronzoil Shifter Cable Bushings, Magnaflow Cat Back Exhaust, Unichip, Injen Billet Aluminum Engine/Sparkplug covers and oil cap, Optima RedTop Battery, Lineage Ground Wire KitAwaiting install: Energy Suspension Motor Mounts, DC Sports Header
I used to work at Target...they have massive cardboard balers in the back...they crush hundreds and hundred and hundreds of boxes into a cube about 8 by 8 by 8...give or take...and they use a heavy steel wire to bind it all together and send it off for recycling...aka bailing wire.
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
quote:As for the midgate... If you took off the inside panels of the hatch, primered the inside and just rust proofed it and sealed the screw holes with silicone or rtv sealer, wouldn't that work just as good?Yes it would. That's my whole point.
BTW, anyone know how to install safely a spoiler without drilling sone hole to bolt it on the car? From my part, I don't know how. Every single spoiler needs holes to be installed.
the spoiler from apc for the matrix comes with 3m tape but i wouldnt trust it.besides i didint think you could just buy the peices minus installation. i would diy it anyway... im horrible with paint and sealer and stuff. the body kit and spoilers is a job id leave to the dealers.most of them know what they are doing.
look my sniggies, i had a strizz-oke in my brizz-ain okay, you know what im saying. so i cant move all good. but thanks for mentioning that .thank you very much.athf4evr. click here! you know you want to!!!
To do the right install, you HAVE to drill holes for a spoiler. You could put it on with tape, but then you'd be picking it up off the road in the future. As was said, all you need to do is touch up the bare metal from the drill. If it's like most spoilers, theres a rubber seating gasket that goes around the base of the spoilers, so no water will get in there anyway.

Yeah, I notice this guy hasn't posted back. Musta' realized he didn't know what he was talking about. I bet he get all his exterior add-ons from Auto Zone... if it ain't got double sided foam tape, it ain't legit! ~~Z600
