Moon Roof question?

Post by Lee »

Can anyone tell me if when closing the moon roof, it stops halfway closed, and you have to release the close button and resume pressing to get it completely closed? I took mine in to be looked at and was told "this is normal operation". I would like some feedback from other owners to ensure what they say is correct! Thanks!

I thank you so much for your speedy reply! (I wouldn't want to get my head stuck or anything like that!)

First open stage, it tilts up in the back. Second stage, it drops down and slides back into the roof.Glad to see you made it over here!

My sunfire was opposite. You pressed the open button once, it opened to vent position. Push it again, it opened full on it's own. Closed without stopping. There is no reason we can't have express open on this moonroof, and certainly, the whole "stop halfway" thing is absurd. Can't be a safety issue. Only if the moonroof closed on it's own would that be for safety. Because you have to hold the button down, IMHO, it's just stoopid.

There are 2 separate buttons-one for tilt, one for slide. They work independantly (and there is a sliding cover inside in case it is too sunny I guess)

It's probably because 2 different motors are being worked, thus 2 switches. One motor to put the back end up/down for the tilt function, and another to slide it into the roof or back out and up. I really don't mind the 2 presses to close it....it's my first moonroof though...so it could just be me.

has anyone thought about lighting up the switches for the moon roof . meaning on the switch you only see the slide and the tilt like on durangos that say unlock on the doors. or like the GTP steering wheel.. . . .

An upgrade or replacement to the stock moon roof controller is in the works. Not the fast works, but in the works...

like Salsa said, the difference is that in a sunfire (like my wife's Grand Am) the opening is a sunroof....where the glass slides over the roof. There you can get away with one switch (first position is tilt open, second is open all the way). In the Vibe, it is a moonroof....the glass goes into the roof. So now you need 2 motors....one to tilt up, and one to slide the glass back into the roof. That's a lot of roofs.......

I had an aftermarket moonroof on my Ford Probe. It would either vent, or open. To vent, you held the switch to the close position until it vented. Hold it to open and it would close, hold open again and it would fully open the roof. No automatic movement, you'd have to hold the switch the whole time, but it was only one switch...

You pushed it one way for the back to pop up. You pushed it the other way and it closed, if you then released the button and pushed it again it would sink down into the roof and slide all the way back (didn't stick out of the roof like the Vibe's does a little bit). It only had one motor and one switch. It also had an emergency function. If the roof wouldn't close you could pull down on the light/switch assymbly and you would see a allen wrench hole. The allen wrench crank was attached to the back of the light/switch assymbly. Then you could just crank it closed (or open).

I had a sunroof on my 99 Chrysler Sebring LXI and it had one switch that you would use to open and close but it would go up over the roof not inside like the Vibe and it had the same feature as the Vibe that closed half way stop then push again to close complete.
