Post by cptnsolo77 »

Im paying $1500 for my 2yr 24K extended warranty through the used car dealer.Am i spending too much? I have read of other companies you where you can purchase your own extended warranty. Are they buyer beware?

I remember another auto board thread recommending Warranty Direct http://www.warrantydirect.comI got a quote from them once but decided to take my chances. If you get a quote, and don't bite, they often will followup by e-mail with a discount offer. At least in the old days one problem with manufactuer (GM etc.) extended warranties was they had a list of covered items, whereas with these other warranty plans there was just a list of exclusions. It was easier to understand the exclusions. Typical exlusions would be wear parts such as the clutch, brake pads, lights etc. My experience is limited to a Chrysler warranty - a motor mount needed replaced but alas motor mounts were not among the covered parts. From my observation the price they charge does not factor in the optional equipment. If I had a car with antilock brakes, a CD changer, stability control - perhaps the price of the warranty would make sense. Those things break and are expensive to have repaired.

you bought a used 2003 base auto. Probably not going to have $1500 worth of warranty repairs to do in the next two years, but extended warranties are as much for peace of mind as for economic benefit. I have heard some people say that they got a good price on an extended warranty through their normal car insurance company, but I have no direct experience. The important thing is the terms of the warranty, what is covered, how do you submit a claim, who is allowed to do warranty work, stuff like that.

Check into the GM MajorGuard, that's really the only one I can recommend...Expensive,but if you need it, very worth it.

There is a Chrysler dealer in Michigan that discounts the Daimler Chrysler (now just Chrysler) extended warranty plans - http://www.extended-warranty-pro.com/index.htmlI wonder if there is a GM dealer somewhere that does the same.

I found this -http://www.gm-auto-mall.com/but it seems to say that once the 3 years/36,000 miles is passed - then you cannot buy the GM Major Guard.
