What to do in Detroit for 7 hours???

Post by AKLGT »

Well, we have a 7 hour lay over in Detroit on our way back on the 15th. from about noon til about 7:30 pm. so, we are thinking about renting a locker, leaving our small carry on's at the airport and heading into Detroit to walk around or shop. Isn't there a big car museum in Motor City?? if so, where's it at and do you think we'd have enough time? keep in mind, we'd have to go through security again so we really would only have about 5 hours.

Detroit metro airport is about 30 minutes from Downtown Detroit so you will have to factor that in. 1. The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village will be fairly close. They are in Dearborn and are readily available. http://www.hfmgv.org/2. The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is well known but not much automotive related there. 3. Unfortunately with your short layover you can't catch our league-leading Detroit Tigers dominate at Comerica Park.4. Just wandering around downtown Detroit would be nice, especially along the Riverfront by the Renaissance Center (GM's headquarters). It might surprise you how nice it actually can be. Detroit is always getting a bad rap in the national media. I'm not saying we don't have our problems but....5. Take a ride up Jefferson Avenue along Lake St. Clair and see some of the big houses in Grosse Pointe plus it is a nice drive.6. Take a drive to Belle Isle (right off Jefferson). It is a nice island in the Detroit River that is basically a giant park. Also home to the Detoit Yacht Club along with the recently close Aquarium. That's my 2-cents, hopefully it helps.Mike

On the other hand.....the airport is about 1/2 from Ann Arbor which has a pretty interesting downtown to browse around, and also they have a little school that it might be interesting to see called the UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN!!GO BLUE!

The Henry Ford museum is great, I've been up there twice. Very much to see in there!

Yea Grosse Pointe has some BEAUTIFUL, just HUGE houses along the lake...if you venture into some of the subdivisions there are some even more amazing older ones. If you are hungry stop in Greek Town and go to PizzaPopalis....best deep dish pizza ever made garenteed Take a ride on the People Mover too. It's a good way to see the city from slightly higher up. See the stadiums and theaters and all that fun stuff fmr inside. It doesn't take alot fo time to circle the city either.I'm outa ideas...I can't go to any of the casinos so I don't venture downtown a whole lot unless it's for NAIAS or AutoRama.BTW that's a LOOOOOOONG layover (removed)...have fun with that.Let's schedule a mini meet real quick lol!

Guard your wheels. The ones on my rental were stolen while we were there. Oh, and visit the Henry Ford Museum. It rocks!

ya, phil says it's not enough time to go see the Henry Ford Museum. However, not sure when the next time would be if we had the chance again. so.... maybe we can do that. however, it's gonna be tough to break away now that the security has been extremely hightened. may take 3 hours just to get back through security!

You would have plenty of time for the Museum. I went there with my history class last semester on a Saturday and we made it through pretty much everything (even the boring stuff) in about 2-3 hours or so. It isn't too far from downtown anyways I don't think.
