Noise when going from reverse to 1st

Post by shane_c »

It seems that when I put the car in reverse and back up, come to a complete stop, put it in 1st and go to pull away that I can hear a noise coming from under the car. Sounds kind of like a hollow clunk. Anyone else get this?

If it does it only when you back up for the first time after starting the car, that's the ABS system initializing.

I've never heard of this on a car before but that would explain it.

Try backing up and going forward a few times to see if it keeps doing it each time after your initial start/reverse/1st run. That will tell you if it is the ABS or not. Let us know your findings after doing this.

Glad I found this post!! my 2005 Vibe was making the same strange clunking noise. I tested it out and found out it was only after going in reverse and then moving forward between first and second gear shifting. I notified the dealer and they checked out the brakes and did some minor adjustments and lubrication which seems to have fixed the issue! Thanks again folks.
