Recording industry loses file-swapping appealLast Updated Thu, 19 May 2005 16:14:38 EDT TORONTO - The recording industry has failed again in its attempt to force internet service providers to reveal the names of file-sharers but it may be able to try again. In a unanimous decision Thursday, the Federal Court of Appeal dismissed the Canadian Recording Industry Association's appeal of a March 2004 ruling that said ISPs like Shaw, Rogers and Bell did not have to reveal the names of 29 users accused of sharing thousands of music files. In his 2004 ruling, Justice Konrad von Finckenstein had said that sharing music files does not breach Canada's copyright laws. He turned down the industry's request to force ISPs to reveal contact information of the users in question, saying that the group had failed to come up with sufficient evidence matching the online pseudonyms of file-sharers to the specific IP addresses of the various service providers' customers. The recording industry association is seeking the users' real identities in order to follow its U.S. counterpart in suing file-swappers for sharing copyrighted songs online. In Thursday's decision, the three judge-panel turned down the appeal request but wrote that the earlier ruling should not have made conclusions about whether downloading or uploading music should be illegal."Conclusions ... should not have been made in the very preliminary stage of this action," Justice Edgar Sexton wrote in Thursday's written decision. "They would require a consideration of the evidence as well as the law applicable to such evidence after it has been properly adduced."The court also suggested that the recording industry group could return with stronger and more current evidence against file-swappers."The appeal will be dismissed without prejudice to the plaintiffs' right to commence a further application for disclosure of the identity of the 'users' taking into account these reasons," Sexton wrote. At the end of March, the Canadian government announced several proposed changes to the Copyright Act aimed at ending the unauthorized sharing of music, movies and TV files online.

Limewire, right now is one of the best in my opinion. You also have Bearshare, Grokster, and Bittorrent, to name a few. I tried Bittorrent, but it was real confusing because you had to log onto one of several webpages to have access to it and it took me a while to find one of them, and the website doesn't really tell you where to go. A few of my friends use it and they like it though. been using limewire the past month or so and it's been great. i'm not a huge music downloader however, so not much to share. lol.

Dont know why since it seems to have the same files.

trdvibe go grab nero burning rom http://www.ahead.de its free (trial that never ends :D) and it can convert most audio files into the music cd to play in cd players.Limewire seems to be the most popular oncampus, then there's emule which is used a ton in the UK so you can find much bigger selection of things. about getting caught though.. torrents almost force you to share, and if you get them from a site i hear the riaa is taking records of those ip's and using them to sue, on p2p things there are plug-in's to block ip's and from what i hear you only get caught if you upload, do as you will. Also there are mp3 sites in russia that sell songs for like 10 cents.

The reason why it hangs is because one of your MP3 files is corrupted.

ATTENTON FREELOADERS:I hope you're well aware of how your piracy is taking away pennies upon pennies from the artists whose blood and sweat went into the very same music you're downloading! And think of the billions you'e stealing from the record companies! Do you REALLY want to place such a burden upon yourself?Man, I love the attached pic... It never gets old.

Artists dont even get that much money, its the producer/record company that does, if you want to support a artist go to their concerts then they get more money. unless you like rap, then most are rappers/producers so they get all/most of the money aka eminem, dr dre, 50 cent, Inc., diddy etc. you know its not illegal to have back ups of cd/movies/games you own, so why not back up things for other ppl just in case they lose their original. lol. studies have shown that if ppl didnt download music most wouldnt of bought the cd any way as most the music these days sucks or only 1-2 songs on the cd are any good. (kanye west's new cd is HORRID dont even download it, its a waste of any resource you use to get it) they arent losing money, they are only speculating what they are losing and since people wouldnt buy the cd anyway its all bs. most people use downloaded music to see what they like then go and purchase it.as for that pic, thats freakin awesome, i love how it looks just like a old imac.....strange.. you know only purchasing windows funds communism

Um, hello! If I'm rembering correctly - purchasing Limewire Pro, you're just supporting the mechanism used to pirate, that money doesn't find its way into the evil record companies or the poor starving artists in *insert country here*. Only online music downloading mechanisms such as iTunes/etc. where you purchase the music are technically legit. I really could give a rat's bunghole about what anyone does, I was just being a wiseguy...

lol. well, regardless, i could care less if people don't like others d/l their music. at least they're being listened to in the first place. if i like a song that much, i'll buy the whole damn album just so i can get all the album artwork, pics, etc.

WinMX is no more (http://www.slyck.com/news.php?story=921). Is Limewire really free of Spyware,Adware, Trojans and Virus like they claim on their website?

Yeah it works with the Microsoft DRM - you can transfer the music to your mobil players - but they also expire when you stop paying.Lame - unless you don't mind a monthly charge for listening to music. Oh wait I'm paying $13/month for XM! That doesn't seem like such a bad deal now!

I'll try Shareaza. There was an article in the L.A. Times today that all but recommended eDonkey (http://www.latimes.com/busines...story). The article is a bit long, but basically it says eDonkey is better at filtering out the fake files than the other p2p applications.
