I do. Just wanted to start an off topic thread on this board about music downloads or any other P2P file sharing applications. I can offer some help or advice to people who may want to try it. Anything to do with downloading, ripping or burning music or other file types, drop it here. We're obviously all a smart bunch of coconuts, or we wouldn't have purchased a VIBE, am I right? If this too far 'off topic' for the moderators here, lemme know and I'll shaddup.
Hi VR, yes I do enjoy downloading MP3's. I like to use WinMX, Edonkey and Kazaa Lite. I also download SVCD rips and burn them to watch in my DVD player.

hm... i have a question. i havent looked real deep into this... but now that i have a cable modem im interested in downloading MP3s for free. im a little concerned about using Kazaa. with the online acceptance form your agreeing to pimp out your processor so they can sell computational power to 3rd parties. i dont want to connect my pc to the matrix quite yet. what are your thoughts on the best, least intrusive (and nosey) site to download from?

Use Kazaa Lite or WinMX. Don't touch Kazaa - only Kazaa Lite. Kazaa has spyware amongst other undesireable things. I believe you can still get KazaaLite at http://www.kazaalite.com and WinMX at http://www.winmx.com. If you can't find KazaaLite I can send the latest version to you.WinMX is Canadian, out of Windsor Ontario, so the blasted RIAA hasn't really set their targets on them yet. There are many others to choose from, but these two are the most popular right now with the best selection and the least intrusive.
If you're using WinAmp as your MP3 player on your computer, I highly recommend a decoder that I found a few weeks ago called MAD MP3. It's free, but works ONLY with Winamp. After you've set WinAmp to use the MAD decoder rather than the built-in one, the sound improvement will literally blow your mind. I'm not an audiophile by any stretch (just a geek that likes her tunes and toys) but this is incredible. As for a download client, I use BearShare Pro. There's probably better clients out there, but I've been using BearShare ever since the dark days descended upon Napster and I've become very comfortable with it. When I purchased the license, it was cheaper than the current $19.95/6 mo. deal on now, but in any event even at current rates the elimation of pop-ups is well worth the money. When I find that an artist has more than two good songs on an album, I reward them by going out and buying their CD.
Screw that.... IRC is the way to go, i build a computer in a drawer that sittin under my bed and i hooked it up to my network.Im downloadin full movies all the time, kazaa and winmx are just as played out at napster...

I understand what you mean, but if someone really wanted to get your IP address using a P2P app, all they need to do is download a "sniffer" type of program that shows all activity going to and from their PC (including seeing you downloading their stuff). Just because you can't see the IP's in a P2P app doesn't mean they aren't there. But this way using a P2P app, it doesn't give someone an immediate description of you as if you were on IRC.quote:What is the world coming to? Don't worry, u give ur ip address away everytime you email someone, and the admins of this site probably have it too.

I always keep about a thousand on my hard drive and store thousands more on CDR in MP3 format. I guess about 5 or 6 thousand on disc. No country - there are only 2 kinds of music I can't stand - Country and Western. Oh, and no Celine Dion allowed either. Absolutely no guilt here. I never made a penny off of it. I burn a lotta Cd's for friends, but I don't charge for it. The RIAA are freakin' idiots. The number one rule in a battle is 'know your enemy'. With Napster, at least they knew who the enemy was and had a chance to control it. Napster even offered to work with them and offered a billion dollars to settle. Instead, they destroyed a brilliant product and spawned a revolution in file sharing. Now new P2P applications spring up every day, the next one better than the last. Looks good on em'. Viva la revolution!
Yeah, you have to be careful nowadays. If you have a Cable connection...get a firewall, or download ZoneAlarm software firewall from www.zonelabs.com. I didn't have one and I got hacked. Everything gone save for a few viruses. The cable networks leave you vulnerable to attack. Set your firewall to tell you when a high level threat has been blocked, and you will see them happen right in front of you.Zonealarm is free and it works great, so why not?

old thread Has anyone tried Napster now that it is back and legitimate? i keep seeing ads for it on TV, and they supposedly offer a two week free trial period. I may try it, but was wondering if anyone already had any feedback to offer on it.
Haven't tried Napster lately. Just something about paying a monthly subscription fee that rubs me wrong. I usually use Wal-Mart for my downloads - no subscription fees.

I use Limewire here at the office and home (office iBook, home PC) and never had a problem with it. All the latest songs are on it, it even checks to see if the file is corrupted.

Dang old thread. I use Limewire. I have a little over 3.5 G. About 530 songs. Plus like 10 movies as well. I don't really DL a lot of "popular" music with it I usually look for less well known stuff and a lot of techno. I buy my share of CD's and such, but I am not going to buy a CD when there is only one or two good songs on it. I only buy when I really like the band or there is a minimum or three good tracks. Which is hard sometimes with the real high quality music we have now adays.

It won't even boot correctly anymore and it runs so slow. I have Norton Internet Security and update it regularly (weekly) and I keep up to date with the updates from Microsoft too. I've been considering just getting a whole new machine, but I like the one I have.I'd like to use some other free p2p file sharing programs and get kazaa off my machine, but I don't know which ones are good to use.

is iTunes free? And can I burn CD's from the downloads? I use iTunes to listen to streaming radio feeds, but I can't save the songs as they are played.

You can burn up to 7 identical CD's (you must reorder or change the track listings before you burn the 8th), download to unlimited iPods, and listen to your music on up to 4 computers. Each computer contacts the iTunes network to get "authorization" to play a song. As long as 4 or fewer machines are authorized, it'll auto-authorize and start playing. If you have more than 4, you have to deauthorize a computer before using another computer. And it's pretty easy to get around the DRM (I'm sad to say). All you have to do is burn the Protected AAC source files to a CD, then use iTunes itself, re-rip the tracks back to the PC in MP3 format, boom, free reign.

Limewire is free, and it is pretty good. I have used Winmx and Kazaa Lite also. Don't use Winmx, it is garbage now. Limewire, right now is one of the best in my opinion. You also have Bearshare, Grokster, and Bittorrent, to name a few. I tried Bittorrent, but it was real confusing because you had to log onto one of several webpages to have access to it and it took me a while to find one of them, and the website doesn't really tell you where to go. A few of my friends use it and they like it though.
