what is holding these speakers in and how do you get them off?

Yup, rivets. The rear ones are farily easy to drill out, and most 6.5" speakers can screw directly to the metal in the rear door.The front doors are the same, but I left them in and gutted the speaker so I wouldn't have to get the spacers you'll need to clear the window..
