Guru's Some help here with the 1zz and 2zz

Post by MyMatrixHerVIBE »

Hello, I own a Matrix with the 2zz my wife has a new Vibe with the 1zz, I noticed that the 1zz has no throttle cable, have they always been that way? or is that new for 05? I also noticed the 1zz has no smog pump at start up like the 2zz so does that mean the 2zz polutes more or what? I also saw on the Vibes window sticker where it said the Engine is built in USA while the Tranny is from Japan. So is the 1zz built in the Freemont plant with the car? From what I have read the 2zz is built in Japan by Yamaha and shipped to Toyota plants, is that true? Its just amazing how these engines are the same size, but COMPLETELY different. Thanks for your time.......Jeff

Actually, my research has turned up no evidence Yamaha played any role in the 1ZZ-FE...all signs confirm Yamaha building the 2ZZ-GE...but can't say for sure about the former...EDIT: my bad, we were talking about the 2ZZ all along. Confirmed.

Yeah the only reason I know is because one time while looking around the engine bay there was either yamaha branded into the engine somewhere or it says on the sticker on the underside of the hood

Hi Jeff, welcome to genvibepotential buyers have to decide between Matrix vs Vibe, and also between the base model vs. GT/XRS. You have both. What do you think of the differences?my 2003 base vibe has a throttle cable, I'm not sure how I feel about "drive by wire" as far as pollution goes, http://www.fueleconomy.gov has a way you can compare two vehicles side by side, and when I compared the two, the 04 XRS put out a little bit more greenhouse gasses (probably due to to the lower rated mpgs) but the 05 base auto Vibe scored significantly better on their EPA pollution score, the XRS at 1 out of 10, the Vibe at 6 out of 10. Not sure exactly what those scores really mean, but on the surface it indicates that the base is a lot cleaner than the GT/XRS. It may not be as dramtatic a difference though, as the cars run on different fuel grades, and might be in different classes , making direct comparison more difficult, I don't know.

Confirmed.I was always under the impression the 2ZZ is a toyota built engine that was re-tuned by Yamaha.. Either way..it's got some serious designers behind it.

The engine is a Toyota engine that was sent to Yamaha. Yamaha changed out the basic parts to high performance part and called it the 2ZZ. Yes the 1ZZ and the 2ZZ have the same displacement, but the 2ZZ has the higher performance parts. Also, the tranny may not be able to handle it if you push it extremely hard for long periods of time. But anyway the tranny is good but one should have been developed for the 2ZZ.Remember, the Quad 4 by Oldsmobile. That engine was too powerful for the tranny, suspension, and everything else. It really was before its time.

Yes the 1ZZ and the 2ZZ have the same displacement, but the 2ZZ has the higher performance parts. Kind of true. The 1zz was sent to yamaha to make a powerplant that performed well at high speeds. Yamaha overbored the cylinders, and then de-stroked it to make it capable of high rpm horsepower and higher compression. They also added sleaves to the cylinders to keep this extra stress from damaging the engine. Aside from other minor parts, the other most notable performance mod that was added was VVTL-i. Heres the 2zz fact sheet to help clear things up. http://forums.genvibe.com/zero...e.pdf

Same difference, higher perfomance parts, or in other words modifictions. Or as the mechanic told me at GM, Yamaha "massaged it."

I am confused!

Forgive the newbie. I am guessing that the 1zz is the base and the 2zz is the GT, or is that just different designations between Vibe and Trix? Anyway, I just got a base '03 and I am looking to update performance eventually. My question is, which gets better results, boosting up the base model with performance parts, or tweaking out the GT.Being that I have the base, I was hoping that putting a CAI and exhaust would be a good start. Then changing out to forged pistons and different cams,(if they even make those for the 1.8). After that putting on a turbo or a supercharger. I would think that would bring it in the 180 to 200 range.Oh, to also throw a kink in things, we have the automatic, a requisite for my wife. I hope I am not diverting this thread too much, I am just really curious. Thanks,David

The 1zz is sleeved, the 2zz is not. The aluminium cylinders bores of the 2zz are treated with a nykosil type MMC hardening proccess similar to what Porshe uses. The tranny is also up to the task but is limited to about 270 HP worth of mods. The 2 motors actually have very little in common except for the basic block size and arrangement. Here's some info. http://russ.angrypacket.com/in...age=0
Vibe GT, TRD springs, Progress bar, STB, Unichip, Borbet E 16x7.5, 225/50 Bridgestone RE750, beefed up grounds and battery bypass capacitors(had em laying around)
