Aftermarket "manual" auto transmission???

Post by Z600 »

Sorry, I don't know what they actually call them. The auto transmissions that allow you to manually change the gears ( usually by a "+" or "-" area on the shifter). It seems like it would be a simple thing to make (if not to install). Has anyone ever seen such a thing? All you would need is just a simple push button assembly that interrupts the signals from the computer and manually tells the tranny when to shift and what direction... doesn't seem like a terribly complex invention. I've not seen one, just something I was wondering about.~ Z600

Well, technically, you can do that. But I know what you're talking about. It's called Manumatic.

Yeah, I pretty much do that now at least from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. After that you don't have much control since it's an automatic. I know some cars are made with that where you can shift it manually or let it go automatic.

Well, you can go from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to overdrive. That's what I did for a little bit.

Nicee. Wouldn't you have to change the ECU as well? Other than the tranny parts?

Many places will use the term "Tiptronic" shifter, or clutchless manual as well..
