Ok so my brother just bought a new laptop and he called me to ask how does he get his files from his laptop to his desktop. I know what you are thinking floppy or disk but he has tons and tons of school work that would take a long time to put on disk and transfer. My question is how do you link the two? I know its with a cable but is it a usb cable or is it a diffeent "special" cable to link them? I dont have the laptop here so I cant look at it I know its an HP w/Intel 4. Thanks.

If both computers have a network card, all you have to do is get a crossover cable (looks like a cat5 patch cable but is different), if the laptop has XP it should recognize that it is connected to another computer.

or he could open a yahoo account and get 100mb of space in email and like 25mb in yahoo briefcase. upload the files he needs and then download them onto the desktop.

How about a Zip drive?Buy one of the external versions...then you can just flop it back and forth between the two machines...But I agree with what was said above - a Cat 5 crossover is your best bet!
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
If you're going to buy new equipment to swap files, you might as well go all out. Buy yourself a wireless card for the laptop and a wireless router. Now connect the desktop to the wireless router via a cat5 cable and set up the notebook on the wireless network. Now you can swap files/game/search the internet from anywhere in your house!

Mr. Poopypants is the only one who ISN'T complicating things more than they need to be. Yes, you have multiple options, but all you need is a crossover cat5 cable which costs $3 at BestBuy (even cheaper at small computer shops). Any Windows OS will automatically recognize it and you can transfer at up to 10mb/s, even if you don't have a broadband internet connection. The second-most popular option is to just burn CD's. You can store 700mb on the avg CD so even 2 gigs of data would only take 3 CD's. Zip drives are out of the question as they are antiquated and some stores no longer sell them. A router or switch is sometimes a pain for a n00b to setup and completely pointless unless you want both boxes to have simultaneous internet access. ...and most people stopped reading this about 6 sentences ago anyway so I'll just shut up now.

You have to share out the folders you want to move, make sure you server service is on and the file and print sharing option is on on the computer that you want to transfer the files from. On the computer that you are transferring the files to, you need to map the shared folders. For example the computer that you are pulling the files off of will be COMPUTER A and the computer that will receive the files will be COMPUTER B. On COMPUTER A, go to start>control panel>performance and maintenance>administrative tools>services scroll down to Server service, if it is not started, start it. Close out of that screen, go to Start>Control panel>network connections, double click on the LAN connection that should be present because of the crossover connection. It will open a small window, click on properties and make sure that File and Print Sharing is turned on (checked). Next, go to the folder you want to share, right click on it and select Sharing. Name the folder whatever you want, for example TRANSFER1. After you do this you will need to find the actual name of the computer. Right click on the My computer icon and select properties, on the computer name tab you will see the computer name. For example we will still use COMPUTER A. NOW go to computer B, right click on the My computer icon and select "Map network drive" Leave the drive letter alone and in the folder box type the following using the names of your computer and the shared folderCOMPUTER ATRANSFER1it will open the folder from the other computer, from there, you can drag and drop or copy and paste everything you need.Hope this helps, I'm such a nerd.
