Re: 1 ZZ FE Rebuild - Hard Start

OK, Jolt is on to something.

When I put the key to the "on" position, ECU is in OL mode.

The second it starts, the ECU switches to CL mode, even as the CTS reads 110F.

I have to keep my foot on the pedal until CTS reads 190F, then it will idle on its own.

Re: 1 ZZ FE Rebuild - Hard Start

As to loop mode, my scan tool can detect this, but I've been so obsessed with CTS, IAC,and MAF that I haven't monitored it. It certainly would explain why the car can suddenly maintain idle at 190F. I will check this tonight. If this is the problem, do I need Toyota to flash the ECM (or worse yet re...

Re: 1 ZZ FE Rebuild - Hard Start

Thanks for the advice.

There is an ECM recall, but it has something to do with the airbag. I don't get it.

It is all stock, TB, air, everything. Timing has been verified.

I just made a rather disconcerting observation. The coolant reservoir is low. My first 1ZZFE might be a big fail.

1 ZZ FE Rebuild - Hard Start

This is actually a 2003 Matrix, but sister cars so I hope you can help. I bought a 2003 Matrix with a blown engine and did a complete rebuild, bearings, rings, reconditioned head, pretty much the works. Kind of stupid to rebuild a 1 ZZ FE, but I never did one before so I figured I’d give it a try. W...

I realize this is a stale thread, but I'm sharing it in case someone else has the same problem. This thread solved the problem on my 2003 AWD Vibe. The car had lost all power and I was stranded about 250 miles from home. A 17mm socket was all it took to disconnect the pipe. I was surprised because e...

I don't replace parts recreationally, only when the car tells me they need replaced. My money says you make your last 8K without replacing any o...

I live in Iowa. Low crime & both cars are garaged, so I'm not too worried.

Yes, the Toyota beeps but not the Pontiac.

One other interesting thing. The Pontiac alarms when I press the panic button, just like the Toyota.

Two cars, one fob

Sorry about the double entendre, I couldn't resist. Owning an '06 Vibe and an '06 Matrix and noticing the key fobs are very similar (except the Toyota fob has a "panic" button), I said to myself "self, I wonder if I can program one fob to control both cars?" I hopped into the Vib...

Good work! I spent the better part of Friday at a "pick and pull" yard. I had four Vibes to choose from and I got a lot of stuff for $35. I was even able to replace the hinge in the center consul.

Re: Airbag Recall- Dealer Necessary?

I'm just speculating: Maybe the driver's side airbag in the Vibe was made in a different factory where quality control was much higher, where as the Civics was not. I just read last night that while Toyota is part of the recall, none of there vehicles have been involved in injuries. Tacata did such...

Re: Airbag Recall- Dealer Necessary?

Have people been able to simply make an appointment and get the airbag replaced? I received a letter about the recall, but it said I would be contacted at a later date to set up an appointment. That was a year ago and there has been no follow-up.

Dip stick tube

I've noticed some loose rust on the tip of my dip stick when I check the oil level. I was pretty sure it was coming from the dip stick tube and not the oil pan, but it was hard to diagnose with the intake manifold in the way. I removed the intake manifold since I wanted to replace its gasket anyway....

So apparently I need to learn how to read, sorry.

It still puzzles me that you would have water low like that. Short of rusting a hole through, losing a grommet or cracking the inner fender, I don't see how water would get there.

Thanks, I had no idea what it was called. There is a thin sheet metal baffle all the way across the inside top of the valve cover. I'm sure it is there to prevent liquid from being sucked into the PCV valve.

Hi Bill No sunroof, I seriously doubt that water would make it all the way in the back without showing signs along the roof fabric. I was thinking that maybe a vent in the hatch area is letting water splash in from the wheels, but that's unlikely cause the water is clear. Glad you could rule out su...

You also have to perform special procedures to bleed ABS brakes, seemingly also involving a special scanner. I have said scanner, the real challenge is determining all systems that work with ABS. Engine Noise Solved!

Sometimes a blind squirrel finds an acorn. I've owned a 2006 Vibe for about a month now. I've noticed that there is a "tick" in the engine, not unlike you would hear from a stuck lifter (if the Vibe had mechanical lifters). It bothered me, but I couldn't find anything, so I lived with it. ...

Yes, I get it. Cars don't last in the junkyard long. This place practically gives parts away, so I might grab the mirrors and trim. Sort of a $50 insurance policy. I could buy the whole thing for $250 if I had a place to put it.
