My fiance had to take a detour home from work at midnight tuesday night due to a large oil storage fire downtown. Well, she's not good with navigation, so she ended up a little out of town. She said that she was cruising along, and then deer jumps right in front of her. She had to slam on the brakes, and when the vibe came to a stop, she was inches from it and staring right at it. She finally gets home and tells me the story, and ends it with "It's got really good brakes!"ROFLMAO!
I'd have to say the Vibe has good brakes, too. Last February I was driving home from work late at night on a not so familiure back country road when I saw a sign saying 90 degree turn 25mph. So I slow down to about 35mph and then the road just seemed to stop! All I could do was slam on the brakes and watch as the road was running out and a good 10 ft drop was getting closer. The car sqreeched to a halt with (no lie!) about an inch left before I went over the edge! I really wanted to have a word with the highway department about their warnings on that road.

Yeah, two months after I bought mine I got to test the anti-lock brakes. It was a rainy morning, and some crazy old woman decides to bow up and stop in the fast lane! I thought she was just slowing down, but no! I didn't slam 'em to the floor ('cuz it was really wet), just a good steady depress that got harder and harder as I realized she wasn't moving. I'd never heard anti-lock brakes before... I didn't know they made that kind of noise... a loud "POP! POP! POP!". I stopped just inches from plowing her in the rear. Whew!Unfortunately, the Taurus behind me wasn't paying as close attention. Turned my new Vibe into a $4500 sandwich. Vibe front-ends may be fragile and expensive, but the back end holds up pretty well. It totalled the Taurus. To beat it all, y'know why the old lady stopped? There was a bus picking up some kids in the far right lane (2 lanes over), and she thought she had to stop. In Rome, GA, our school buses are actually the city transit buses; they don't have the side marker stop signs, or any of the other special school doo-dads, so you don't treat them like school buses. She was the only one that stopped. Lucky me. ~~Z600

I had a similar experience about a month after I bought my Matrix. I was doing about 50 on a 6-lane city street leading to the strip. I was cruising along when a homeless guy on a bicycle came darting out into the street from behind a wooden fence. The car to my right locked its brakes and screeched into the curb. I slammed on my brakes and heard the abs kick in. It sounded like a big piece of metal grinding on the pavement. Anyways, I kept control and stayed in my lane and slowed down enough to miss the dude by about 3 feet. The homeless guy just continued across the street as if nothing happened. Next time, I hope he uses a cross walk.
I know the dealer was suprised with my brakes. Two years and around 30k miles, he said they still look practically brand new. He said the shop guys were suprised too. Now, if they could transfer that to the GT clutch... LoL
