Stupid question, but...

Post by Psychobroker »

Is there such a thing as a freeware version of photoshop?I just ordered a demo of Adobe's Photoshop CS, but I don't need/want to buy the full version. Is there something out there that's comperable, at least in its simplest form (even just for making sigs, adding text to pics)? Thanks in advance!

i picked up photoshop elements. works great and that's what i've been using. not sure how to do all the things, but for the main functions, it's working just fine. dman helped me out in figuring if it'd work. and i got it for like $50 at walmart, best price around.

I have Photoshop Elements too. $50 with the student discount, and I haven't found a photoshop feature yet that elements doesn't have.

If you don't need THE Photoshop, there's JASC PaintShopPro from http://www.jasc.com that has lots of capabilities. The full version is often less than $100.00.A new version (9.0) is scheduled for release in September. There's usually an older but full version available as a free trial (30 days after installation) to download.

The closest thing to a true Freeware photoshop is GIMP. You can get it from here. It is a windows port of a Linux program.http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/

Cool, you beat me to recommending it. The GIMP rocks! I've been using the Linux version on my machines for years, and it has served me well. At first it looks simple, but once you start digging around, you'll find some really neat features. And you can't beat the price. For commercial software... Back when I had Windows, I also used Paint Shop Pro quite a bit. I think it was on version 7 or so when I was messing around with it. That was a nice program indeed, may be worth looking into.
