When it rains, it pours!

Post by AKLGT »

Well, as some of you know, last month i went in for emergency surgery for my appendics and ruptured ovarian cyst. since then, i've been recovering quite nicely, healing and getting back into the swing of things. then, last week at my friend's sister's wedding, i started some extreme abdominal pain. obviously it wasn't an appendicitis since that had been removed 3 wks prior. i started feeling really sick and sat down at one of the reception tables where i proceeded to pass in and out of consciousness. by this time, the pain was so great i was literally passing out from it. back to the ER i went! got checked in and they ran a bunch more tests on me. found out i had gall stones! but as we were discussing options on when to have the surgery, the doc came in w/ some lab results that prevented me from having surgery. not good since i was in a lot of pain. they wanted to do some more testing and what not, but gave me a shot of tordal and sent me home.tuesday i went back in to the ER for some cramping and what not. was freaking out trying to figure out what was wrong w/ me. well they did some more tests and found out that the previous test results were wrong. nothing wrong or abnormal at all. that was a relief. so, wednesday i call the surgeon's office to schedule myself in after my trip to TO in 2 wks. the best they could do was 9/14. as i argued w/ my supervisor over waiting that long, another attack hit me. needless to say, they rushed me back to the ER, now becoming a regular there. i wanted my gall bladder removed right away because after 5 trips to the ER and missing work constantly, i couldn't continue with it. i've got about 4 major sales deals going on right now and this just keeps interfering w/ it all. so the surgeon said that he wouldn't generally do it, but since i had 2 big attacks in less than a week, the chances of a returned one would be very high. yesterday they did the surgery and found it "full" and that one had even fell down and was blocking my pancreas. it didn't show up on the tests, but had they not done the surgery i'd be in next week. this would have screwed up a lot of my plans for my sept trip to TO. so good thing i had it removed now so i have 2 wks to recover.

Glad to hear it seems to be going better for you now.My friends dad went in for outpatient gall stone surgery last week (8/11) and the surgeon pulled a Homer and forgot two clamps in him. One of the clamps was on his bowel and his body started to poison itself. His still in the hospital and still cannot breath without a ventilator. At least they say he should fully recover. After this happened I investigated how often it happens and I found an article in the New England Journal of Medicine. The article stated that there are 1500 cases per year of "foreign" objects being left in patients after surgery...and that's in the U.S. alone...and those only include the ones that were reported as malpractice, the actual number is likely much higher. If there are two nurses required by law to count everything before and after the surgery, how can there be 1500 incidents per year?

wow! well, now they are wondering if the first surgery was necessary. that it could have been this gall stone blocking my pancreas. but they checked that and the pain i had from a month ago was very very different from this one!but i got a pic of me and one of my best friends waiting in the sitting room at the hospital after i fainted at her sister's wedding reception! atleast we were the best dressed.... i look like i'm ready to pass out again! well i went into work this morning hoping to get a few things done like pwk and all that stuff. but my boss told me that i was way too glassy eyed and should be home in bed recovering. and since i'm the "all star" as he puts it, they need me at my 100% best and not my slurring comatosed sick self. unfortunately, i used up all my sick time this last month or so and my vaca time (to be with phil) so it's unpaid from here on out. that really sucks, but as he put it, it's better to take 2 dys unpaid then 2 wks if i don't get better. i had to agree with him.so now i'm home, laying on my side and drooling on my pillow as the morphine kicks in. and to think they didn't want me at work today! oh well, guess i better get some rest and go back to my drug induced stupor! have a good day everyone! cause i'm feeling good right about now.

Wow, that really sucks. I can sympathize with you. My wife is a regular at the ER. Hope your feeling better and whatever was causing the gall stones doesn't effect anything else.I really don't like the surgical answer to most problems but sometimes it's necessary. Good luck on your recovery.

Yup you missread everything but there are things that you'll not understand Rob... Hope and I have a lot going on in our lives, stuff that isn't advertised here. Unless she or I were in the hospital over that weekend coming up, its not being canceled and no I am not being selfish. You'll find she'll agree with me.and I am not trying to be rude. sorry if it seems that way.

yes, thanks for the concern guys. working on getting back on my feet. unfortunately, have to do some half days at work since i'm not fully 100%. still can't drive and w/ my job.. i have to. more and more of my sales are going out the door, ones i've been working on for even a year! can't tell you how frustrating that is. plus, now that i've used up all my paid time off, it's unpaid time for me. that doesn't pay the dr bills or just my bills in general. but my bosses know that i'm no good to them if i'm not fully recovered and they are concerned that i don't have any relapses because they depend alot on my brain and it functioning correctly.as for next week's trip to TO, i can't call that off! it would take the dr to sedate me to not go! LOL as it stands, if i'm not fully 100% by then, and god help me i better, then i'll just have to call the airlines and let them know i may need assistance getting on and off the plane. no big deal. so... life remains interesting. back on my clear liquid diet per dr's orders and next check up is tomorrow morning. will have the weekend to work on healing back up as well. just w/ the 2 surgeries so close together he said it'd take longer to recover. but i'm quite hopeful.

This has been one stressful week for me...I am very concerned with Hope's health because of my feelings for her, everything that happens to her concerns me, worries me and all that. These past weeks with her doctors misdiagnosing everything has really been tough. They need real doctors down there and not the kind that spin the wheel and see what problem the needle stops at.

LOL. but he said he will have me healthy to board my plane next week. but yes, all these misdiagnosis have made our lives a big hell over the last month! now they wonder if the first surgery was even necessary and maybe was from the gall stone blocking my pancreas! and once again, they are baffled because all my tests seemed "normal" not to mention the other tests that came back "abnormal" were wrong! but my father is in admin at the hospital and filed a formal complaint. just so happens he oversees a lot of the ER and how efficiently it's run. rather than get their pants sued off for all the grief and screw ups, they are working on a "solution" to waive a lot of the fees from 2 of the 5 visits where they screwed up. generally, the hospital is very good. the doctors i'd trust w/ my life, but as of late, the one doc in particular wasn't very good. but fortunately, the other doc, whom my family has known for like 10 yrs, caught some of these things. the surgeons have been excellent, just the one doc really that wouldn't do more tests when i questioned him. but was quick to supply extra sarcastic and demeaning answers to both me and my parents.

so the latest update today:went to the doc for my check up. asked him about all this feeling nautious, not being able to hold food down, dizziness, and tiredness. he said something about the gall bladder and how it USED to collect all the bile and crap from food, especially fatty foods. now that it's no longer there, it all just goes straight to my intestines or where ever... ... and so my body isn't able to digest some of the nutrients and whatever else that i probably really need. in other words anything and everything i eat goes right thru and my body doesn't get the benefit of the good stuff. something to that affect. and because my body is dehydrated, i'm probably feeling really crappy, tired, and very very dizzy. so still, no driving. eat low fats and lots and lots of fiber. i guess this helps trap the bad stuff that my gall bladder used to catch, so it should help w/ the nausea that leads to the dizziness and my running every 30 minuts to the restroom. but he told me i should be resting and off my feet til monday, even tuesday! i can't do that! so i talked to my boss, who has been very gracious of this whole thing and since i've basicly missed like a freaking month since the end of June. (2 days for the MI meet) and then 10 days first wk of july (TO to see phil and then my best friends wedding) to come back for 5 days of work, then out another week for the appendectomy, work another 4 days of July, first 12 days of august, then i'm in late that friday because the night before was the trip to the ER to find out about my gall stones! then the following week, i'm out tues afternoon, and then weds on! i'll have missed almost another 2 weeks of work! so my boss says, well, you need to get healthy, but you also need a job. and i have to agree. so he says take monday off (unpaid of course) but when i get back from my 4 day trip to TO over labor day weekend, i better be 100% ready to go and not over do or we're going to have some problems. that's understandable w/ all the time off. agh!i sure hope i'm doing a helluva lot better by next week. cause every day i miss work, it's more money gone and more sales lost. i have some appts on tues to close some of my pending sales, but if i'm not there, then they go to someone else. tomorrow will be somewhat busy as i have a nail and hair appt, but i just sit there, so it requires no energy on my part. good thing too. and i guess going to the fair is gonna be out as well.... that sucks. but my friends are gonna come over tomorrow night to watch a movie or play games before i take off and see how i'm doing since i'm the frequent ER shopper. lol. so i think that sunday and monday i will be laying my (removed) in bed, eating fiber bran cereal (yuck!) and probably bored out of my mind. oh well.... ok, that's enough of my ranting for today. i feel somewhat better.

I had my gall bladder out a few years ago, Hope (along with getting a bulge in my aorta sleeved!) and looked into what it does. It actually receives bile, (which is secreted by the liver and helps digest fat) concentrates it and releases it into the stomach after meals. Without it the bile just kinda trickles into the system continously, so your system has trouble digesting high fat meals. Here's a site with some info: http://health.upenn.edu/surger....htmlBTW, a silver lining: I lost 12 pounds while in hospital! Who knew gallstones could weigh so much!

First off, I don't know how I missed this thread until now. I wish you all the best for full recovery, adjustment in your lifestyle now due to the lack of your gallbladder, and resuming a normal life. My prayers will include you also. But otherwise, I'd have to agree with Rob. Without understanding the full scope of the situation, I'd have to say that some priorities are really out of order. Also, if your employer is causing problems because of a potentially life-threatening illness, it's time to talk to a lawyer. Same goes with screwing up your surgeries and diagnoses. Negotiating to reduce costs on 2 of the 5 visits? I'd laugh at that! They should be begging you to not become the hospital's new owner. No joke. The wife of a guy I work with had to have open heart surgery and due to the malpractice of both their doctor and the hospital, she almost died a couple of times from infection that should have been almost entirely preventable. The hospital seems to have broken established protocols and the attitude of the doctor is almost unbelievable. Not to mention the pile of infectious waste that the hospital let accumulate in her bathroom so that the pile got to be higher than the back of the toilet. You'd think that this was some hospital in Calcutta for God's sakes. Good think my co-worker took his video recorder into the hospital and got it all on film. Their lawyer has filed for 7+ million dollars in damages. The case goes to court just before Christmastime this year, and things are still looking optimistic that they will be multimillionaires for the new year. Now you tell me what sounds like a more sensible course of action---slaving at work making yourself more and more sick or collecting money that you may be entitled to that could end your financial worries for a very long time? Even on morphine and other drugs, I think I could make that choice.Whatever you choose to do, I hope that it works out best for you. And don't forget, there is no job in the world out there that is worth taking years off of your life for. Best wishes for a fast recovery!

exactly, rob. that's the problem. i've calculated since the end of june i have taken off approximately 4 full work weeks. between both surgeries and vacation time including this coming weekend, i've only worked a total of about 3 weeks. my bosses have been very supportive and working to try and do their best, but i have a signed contract stating that i will be there at my 100% to work, be able to physically go and meet with clients and prospects, and be able to drive a reliable vehicle to do so. my name signed on the dotted line. trust me, if they had wanted to fire me, they would have done it long long ago. i have a lot of loyalty to them for their support when i was not a good employee. but they believed in me and stuck w/ me thru all the hard times. as an employer, they also know my presence is much needed. they know that i'm fully committed to them and they are here to help me, but i do need to be at my job to work. with my being gone so much and not being at my 100% while i'm there this past month, we've lost a few large clients. and one of them was mine. now, i do not lose many clients at all. after 3 yrs, i've lost maybe 7 total and there were good reasons for it. but this was one of our largest clients and because i wasn't there and on top of my acct like i should have been, we lost it. they know it and i know it. not a good situation. but like i said, they give me grace because it doesn't happen often. i'm on borrowed time right now. we have a dept full of newbies that do not have that much experience nor know how to handle some of the more involved accts. i'm the senior acct exec, so that's my job and that's my expertise. and when i'm not there, they go "oh crap!" and are left to try and pull things out of their butts and hope it works. then when i get back, they give me whatever it is they botched up to have to redo and fix. it takes twice as long, and then eats up my time to not be out selling. i've lost about 5 sales so far that i can see that would have been the equivalent of about $700 in commission additonal to my base salary. that's real money that i (we) need. but then i can't be too mad w/ the other salespeople, because they have done some things for me that i've really needed this last month that have saved me about $800. so how can i get upset to lose $700 in sales when they provided me with some necessities that would have cost me more? with my medical bills piling up and my incredibly shrinking paycheck getting smaller and smaller, you can see where i'm a bit concerned. and this trip is very important. like phil has mentioned, there are some things going on that we don't advertise on the public forum. maybe later if we feel the time is right but now is not. there are a lot of people relying on me to be there, not just phil. and he's got a lot of pressure on him to get the things that i can't do right now done. it's been 2 months since we've last seen each other, and unless i'm on a freaking stretcher, my (removed) is on that plane! it'll be another 3 months before we see each other again. i do appreciate all your concern. really i will be fine. the docs are all very well aware of the situation at hand and are doing whatever they can to make sure i'm healthy and ready to go. aside from the one moron doc (but i'll bite my tongue). both of the surgeons and the original doc (family friend) have been excellent. overall care has been excellent. just one moron who refused to do more testing and double check lab results. i'm still waiting to hear back from the hospital to find out what they are going to do. they aren't going to reimburse the surgeons for their jobs they did. but they have so far waived about $3K in general visits thus far. still waiting on other visits. my insurance is now paying full 100% thank god, and so most of the other fees and deductibles prior are being waived. so i don't really care to be honest how they do it, as long as it's not a ton of money coming out of my pocket. the first surgery (appendectomy) was over $10,000 and i think i've had to pay a total of $120. we'll see how it all works out for surgery #2.i'll be sure to keep you all updated on the crazy insane life of trdvibe.

Hope,That can be a hard problem to detect. My wife went thru it last year, 5 ER trips 1 of them was a code 1 when she stopped breathing. then finally a doctor figured it out.Other then she looks like she got into a knife fight with all of her small scars, she had recovered in about 5 days. She doesn't have problems with greasy foods, So I guess she got lucky there.I wish you fast recovery and a great trip!

yes it was. but the ultrasound showed em pretty clear. what they are puzzled at is why the one blocking my pancreas didn't show on the tests. he said it was pretty blocked up. oh well, they got it. again, this trip has been planned months and months ago. tickets have been bought, things are in place. yes, it's a leisure trip or whatever you want to call it. but it's also important that i be there. lots of people are counting on me to show up, not just for myself. but i do not have to answer to you nor do i really care to. so i will end this little conversation now.

hey hope, i think he is just giving you honest advice. those who care about you would understand if you cannot make it. your health and well-being are foremost, followed by your job. you can do whatever you want, you are a big girl, those of us disagreeing with your choice are just offering our 2 cents as a helping hand

thanks dman. i do appreciate everyone's concerns. and yes, those folks that actually truly care have rights to be concerned. unfortunately, not everyone can read the whole novel. there are a lot of big stressful personal events going on aside from work and surgeries that i don't care to advertise publicly. not just in my own life, but in my family and others i care about. you only see a very very small part of this epic, a chapter in the novel to continue my analogy. so i guess i can understand why some just don't get it. you can't, because you don't have the whole picture, just the small zoomed in parts that i've discussed. it would seem that to some outsiders only seeing this small portion, that my priorities are a little whack. wish i could go into ALL the crazy things, but i just don't feel it appropriate for other people's sakes.i didn't post this thread to cause a debate. simply because i have many friends here and i wanted to share what this last month has been like. plus, being on bed rest, it tends to get boring and a little ranting always helps.

ya i guess so. kinda like i was bored at home! lol. but today was my first REAL day back at work. i must say it felt GOOD! doing so much better and as much as i hated it, i think doing bedrest all weekend and yesterday made a huge difference. i even made a sale today, installed another, and scheduled 2 new appts that will most likely close! so hey! feeling so much better now that i feel like i'm almost at 100%! won't be running or hiking up any mts just yet, but hey, give me a few more weeks.
