Web Development and a small population base.... is it viable?

Post by sloth »

I've been doing web development work for nearly 5 years. Unfortunately the company I work for isn't doing so well. My boss offered the company to me on Monday. But after a lot of consideration, it's just to much debt for what I'd be getting. Essentially a customer base. I telecommute and I think having the majority of my clients in St. Louis and me 16 hours away would be to much stress on the customer relationship for those customers that are used to monthly visits. So I'm considering starting my own local web development company. But I'm afraid there just isn't going to be enough interest with a small population base to make it viable. Anybody have any ideas, suggestions or telecommute opportunities for someone with nearly 5 years of coldfusion development experience?

Though I don't do web design/programming, I have every intention of working as a print/multimedia designer. The problem, however, is that I too live in a very rural environment and all the jobs are in the cities. I was faced with the choice of moving to get a job or staying where I was comfortable. It seems as if you have a tough choice to make. I don't envy you. Good luck.

Well, I'm definately not moving. Lived in O'Fallon, IL for 4 years. Which is about 15 minutes from St. Louis. I don't like the city life and my wife just opened a Massage Center in March. Probably see if I can find a job at the Cable company or one of the telephone companies. Maybe even Wal-mart and do web development on the side to make up the lack of cash flow. That will be after I ride this pony till it dies. If I don't buy it, hopefully my boss will keep it around for a while.

Quote, originally posted by sloth »Well, I'm definately not moving. That was the same decision that I reached. I took a job doing prepress work at a printing company. Though it is not quite what I though I would be doing, it has worked out pretty well for me. I still try to do freelance on the side, but anymore I only design for friends and family.Best of luck.
