On Car Balancing

Post by Atomb »

The story so far...I upgraded my rims when i bought my vibe. I noticed some vibration/shimmy in the steering wheel at approx. 110km/h. So i brought the car back and they noticed that i needed hub sleeves as the rims didn't fit correctly on the hubs. The hub sleeves were installed and the vibration still occurred at and around 110km/h!I brought the car in today and they did 'dynamic balancing' but i took it for a quick spin on the highway and the vibration is still there at the 110km/h mark.Considering the same speed/vibration factor, this doesn't sound like an alignment issue as the car is fine at other speeds above and below 110km/h.So now they're sending it to get 'on car balancing'. Can anybody enlighten me on this technique? Will it solve my issue? Why must it be done this way? Will I have to get it done this way when i get new tires/need to re-balance in the future?Any answers greatly appreciated!

update:It worked. On car balancing has solved the 110km/h shimmy that regular wheel balancing couldn't.Go figure, eh?

it turns out that this is a process used by high end wheel shops for 'high end' cars.i called a friend who mentioned that a mutual friend of ours with a Subaru WRX got his new wheels at the same place the dealer sent my car and they did the 'on car' balancing for him. What this does is take into effect any balancing issues with your rotors, rotating parts, on the car. That way the wheel weights are positioned to take into account all of these 'factors', not just the rim/tire balance. The dealer covered the cost for me. What i'm wondering is, will i have to get it done this way everytime i buy new tires/need a balance?I've heard nothing but good things about the tire shop that they sent my car to from people here at work (and my friend) so i may just get my tires there when i need them and that way they get on car balanced!needless to say, i took the 'highway' route to work this mornng to really test it out and the car is rock solid now at all speeds!
