Taking my salvaged vibe to see if the dealship will repair....

Post by FCser »

My vibes been running great i love it. but i went to get the oil changed the other day and the mechanic noticed that there is a small hole in the inner boot and it is spraying grease out. somehow it got there. they said to see if the dealership would cover it so. dont dealerships have like a 3 yr / 36000 mile warranty at least on the car? or being that mine is salvaged will i not qualify for that? because my car was repaired to specifications and was inspected and everything so it could be deemed safe for the road.any input on warranty situations? im hoping they will just be like ok, yeah we can fix that and do it. but that may not be the case...

If you have the warranty booklet that comes with the car, you will be able to read that GM will void the warranty on cars that have been issued a salvage title. If GM has done that in your case, and the dealer checks the warranty status, you may be out of luck. Assuming the dealer determines the hole in the boot is a factory defect. I have seen posts here from people that appear to work at dealerships. You could post your vin and they might be able to look it up for you. Then you could know what your up against.

If your vehicle has been offically labeled as "writen off" even though it was repaired. GM automaticly locks off the warranty. On the GM Vehicle information there is a section that says Warranty Block (yes/no) and if your car was writen off, that section is probably blocked yes now. That means even if the dealership wants to help you out, GM won't pay for the repair.I've only come across this once at the dealership I work at.

Hopefully it's not a costly repair!

hmm, well it was considered "totaled" so that may void the warranty. but eh i think im going to at least try.. the worst they can say is "no, you gotta pay." its such a small pin-hole i think a bike patch would fix it if they decline me.. i know the part is not that expensive, its an inner axle boot, its the labor that is around 200 or so depending on where i go. maybe a bit more than 200 at a dealership

Hell, you rebuilt the entire front end of the car, you couldn't replace the part yourself?

Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »Yes, the inner boot could be replaced, but are you sure that would be a good idea? Do ya thing there might be moisture in there? It would be a cheaper fix than replacing the entire assembly if you can go that way.Part # for Right/Left side (they are the same) inner boot: 88972488 and is priced at $ 32.25That CV Joint is priced at like $878.00 dollars..... That is probobly why he is wondering if it can be fixed under warranty.what do you mean about the moisture ? in where? inside the boot? so are you saying a bike patch is a bad idea? i havnt made it to the dealership yet probably going to go tomorrow or the next day and see what they say.

He won't need to replace the CV joint, just the boot. You can buy them for about $50 and put it on yourself, but it is a B*tch to do. If it's not covered by GM warranty, I recommend calling around for a quote to replace a CV boot. Usually it's like $80 - 120 to have it done professionally.
