Is the moon roof supposed to leak?

Post by VibeinPA »

I took my Vibe into the dealership several months ago to repair my leaking moon roof. They informed me that this is a known problem from the factory and they repaired it. Well, it didn't take long for the problem to return. Any moderate rainfaill was leaking through the rear corners of the moon roof in the form of a constant dripping. The dealership told me that this is normal and it's designed to do this, but they did say that they cleaned it to help it seal better. It still drips. Is this normal? If this is a real problem, I'd like to correct it before my warranty expires (2 months max).

Absolutely not. We have the moon roof option also and have yet to have a leak. On our last GM product, 2002 Buick Rendezvous, the moon roof leaked from day one. Oh, and a little problem that sometimes when you opened the moon roof all the way it refused to close again. Not fun especially when we got caught in a torrential t-storm. Had the Buick back to the dealer several times, five or six, before they finally got it right. The last time in they had the car for three days because they took the entire moon roof assembly out and replaced it with a new complete unit.Keep going back until they get it right!!!

I can't believe they told you it's designed to leak!!!! What a load of BS! I would take it to a different dealer and possibly even write a letter to the Better Business Bereau.

(Been searching around to post a leak to something I recall reading but haven't found it yet. Tried here, came close with a search at the Matrix/Vibe service forums at another location, perhaps it was one of the Matrix sites.)On the Matrix/Vibe, the sunroof seal is not designned to be leak proof. There is a water management ot handle dirpping water that comes in past the seal. More commonly moderate to heavy rain or car washes. As long as the headliner is not getting wet, any water drips that can be viewed with the roof closed and the sunshade open are normal. Dealer should be able to show you the TSB that says so.

If your moonroof is designed to drip water on you, then I would ask the salesperson where in the brochure this "feature" is mentioned. Some things never change. I've had my car for almost 2 years, and they're still feeding the customers the "That's the way the car's designed" crap when they don't bloody well know how to fix a GD thing! As nice as a moonroof is during a sunny day, I'm still glad I didn't get one. And whenever I think about buying a new car with one, I just come on here, read about all the leaky moonroofs, and that idea quickly leaves my mind!

I know what yall mean... I got a moon roof but did not want it... ( its the only one they could find in the color I wanted ) and if mine leaks I will live at the dealer ship till they fix it.. and it has to go there more than three times... I will file a lemon law lawsuit... cause that is BS... and this paticular dealership just ticked me off... so they better hope to GOD my roof never leaks!!!!

I've owned 2 cars with moonroofs and never had a single problem with any of them.

Just wondering but would a decent aftermarket like a Webasto probably be better in the long run? I also didn't get the OEM Moon roof but more because I got one of the last '03's in the area and had to settle for the 17" wheels. I have been considering having an aftemarket installed like a Webasto. Even considering a larger panel or 2 inline if there is the space and it doesn't compromise structural integrity. Well, that's beside the point anyway. Any input from people who have aftermarket moonroofs?Dave

I think that the moonroof is not designed to leak, but it designed to catch any water from a leak and drain it away before it becomes a problem. I haven't noticed any amount of leakage in mine, even in heavy rain. DavidIPL, GT03 installed a Webasto aftermarket moonroof in his now sold Vibe, looked nice, bigger than the M&T glass, whoever did it did a good job. See http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=3650if anyone is interested, here are some other leaky moonroof threadshttp://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=2395http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=3756http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=4335http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=5218http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=8754http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=8835

well I guess that I will add my problem to the on going list. I have a moonroof in mine and yes it leaks took it to the dealership and the cleaned and relubed the gasket it stopped the stuff coming in the front but now the back is leaking like a summ beatch as I noticed this morning. Not really sure if it is worth taking back to the dealer but i am going to have to. this is the same dealer the told me my tranny shifts smooth just like it was desigined to but it still does the b.s. of not wanting to go in to third sometimes. I really think that the throw out bearing is going on it cause just before you shift and you put the clutch you hear this hellascious noise it isn't too bad but I don't like it, but according to them it is normal and they couldn't duplicate any troubles as far as shifting or noise or anything. Just tells you how much a Pontiac dealer knows about these cars. I am going to get the chance to drive another 04 Gt and see how it sounds. Sorry for running on about this. Later

I've never had a moonroof/sunroof and would never order one, given the choice. I'm tall, too, and the reduced headroom is an issue.I've had cars with removeable panels, though, and never had a problem.

the moonroof is not leak proof there are drain hoses on all 4 corners of the assembly, which drain water down the a pillars and rear hatch area. you should have no water dripping on you. there are adjustment screws that can be adjusted, i think that the pontiac dealers don't know how to fix them because they see so few (remember these are built by toyota not GM) I suggest if the pontiac dealer is giving the run around stop in to the local toyota dealer explain the situation and they may look at it and be able to tell you or pontiac how to fix it.just a suggestion.

I have a moon roof in mine, I can see water dripping past the seal, but have never gotten wet. Ive had roofs in almost every car Ive owned and this is the first one thats ever let water past the seal. But as long as my bean doesnt get wet, I dont care.
