I discovered 4200 today...

Post by Atomb »

I've driven VW's my entire 'licensed' life and my last car was a 98 Golf which had peak torque at about 2800 rpm. this meant i was shifting just above 3200 rpm for the vast majority of the time and the car RARELY saw 4000 rpm (never more than that for 6.5 years!).Well, for the last week (since picking up my Vibe) i've been habitually driving it like my VW and slowly getting depressed at the lack of 'oomph'. My friend, who drives a civic, tried to persuade me to let it wind up this past weekend, but i thought that i should wait as the car barely had 400 km on it.today i decided to let it go...got it up to 4600 rpm (or a bit higher) and i felt the oomph! right around 4200 rpm!!i'm happy again!

oh just redline it, its a Toyota it can handle it Plus these motors are built to take the RPM's, a good Japanese car needs to be wound out.

Oh yeah! In my experience, 16-valve small displacement engines typically don't really come to life until about 4,000 rpm.My Saab SPG Turbo (~3,500 lb. 2-liter 16-valve, ~205 hp) was pretty boring until the turbo started breathing heavy through those 16 valves at about 4000. Then it was (removed)! My '84 VW Rabbit Convertible (~2300 lbs, 1.8-liter, 8-valve, ~90-hp "GTI" engine, close-ratio 5-speed) is happier (and faster) in the lower rpm ranges. The 'Vert will probably beat my auto Vibe to 30, but after that, it's all Vibe.

My 2003 Vibe Base Auto 2-tone Salsa "SalsaWagon" was built in May 2002. I acquired it in Feb 2004/Traded it in on a 2016 Honda HR-V in Feb 2018.

My Cobra used to be OK down low, but really came alive at 4000. It redlined at 6800, but the rev limiter stepped in at 7200......I'll tell you there is nothing like the sound of a V8 through flowmasters spinning to 7200 RPM.........

well, the vibe has really brought me into the world of higher rpms!a V8 at 7200 RPM!! wow! i bet that sends some good 'vibes' (no pun intended) through your spin!

My friend Heath had an Integra with a J-Spec B17a Vtec engine tuned by the Mugen team at V&T Performance, and he would redline it at 12,000 RPM's (Before someone drove into it..), not exactly something I would want to do in my car
