mt bike gurus: i need your help!

ok, my friend marie has a mtn bike that is too small for her but seems to be about the right size for me. i don't know anything about bikes at all. neither does she. she wants to sell it for about $150-200 if it's worth it. it says it's a trek navigator 2000 women's bike. w/ some wierd gear shifts and such. what do you guys think? is it worth what she's asking? is it any good?? thanks for your help.

Well the thumb rule for used good quality bikes (not junk from K-Mart) in almost like new condition is one half the original retail price. I am not familiar enough with Trek to know how much that one cost new, but the "grip shift" is a nice componet. You might want to go to a bike shop and get fitted to the bike before purchasing it. Having the corect fitment is very important to being comfortable while and after riding.ps...I love mtn bike riding! and it fits INSIDE the Vibe!

What kind of riding do you plan to do? That is an entry level bike which would be good for riding on the road or a gravel path. You definately would not want to take that on more technical trails. How much should you buy it for? Well, that's a tough question. It depends a lot on how old the bike is. Most Treks use Shimano drivetrain parts, and Shimano just changed the standard from 8 speed to 9 speed. That bike is a 7 speed. That bike, new, probably sold for about $300. If it's in good shape and is what would fit your riding style, then it's probably worth about $150. It's hard to say.

Well...You should know that that bike is a "cruiser" or a "hybrid" and not a moutain bike.....150 is an okay price but $100 would prob. be a fair deal

I work in a bike shop, that bike on trade would be at best $125. She would be lucky if you took it off her hands for that. I don't have the trek catalog in front of me but I'd say that bike sold for $259-$300 dollars new.

well, we'd be doing like very simple and easy trails... preferably flat or very small hills if any. LOL. i'm not a big fan of biking really, but would like to get a decent one just for fun. so if i took it in for fitment and maybe gave her $100 that might be a pretty fair price?

Yeah...I'd say go for it! If you're not going to be using it alot, it will be a great bike for you. Treks are a good, quality bike, and it should last you for many years if you take care of it. I recently bought a Gary Fisher (made by Trek) and have been very pleased. Also, if you're ever in the Madison, WI area, the Trek factory is about 30 minutes from here. You can take a tour of the plant, it's actually very interesting to see how they are made.

that bike is not intended for off road use. it's what they call a sport comfort bike.
