what mods can I do

Post by makr0jeff »

What engine mods can I do without voiding the warrentty? Like my previous post says, I'm thinking of a new exhaust system and also putting in a cold air intake. Will these void my warrenty.

I've taken my vibe to the dealer and the service manager knows my vibe is lowered and CAI and he has never said a thing about anything voided on the warranty.

Same here. I had a weird noise that developed after my CAI was installed. Sounded like a "torque noise." Anyway, took it to the dealer, he traced it back to the CAI. Said "seems to be coming from that 'funny filter' you got there. I can't help you with that." But he had no issues with it being there. He warned me it could cause "warranty issues," but the dealer is a close friend of the family, and they won't deny me anything they can possibly get warranted. In short, an aftermarket product can only void the warranty of any parts it replaces, moves, removes, or any part "downstream" of it. For example, a CAI voids the warranty on the stock airbox, intake, as well as the MAF sensor, and possibly the vacuum hose. It can't void the warranty on the entire engine, however, unless it can be proven the CAI was a direct cause of that damage. Replacing the headlight bulbs with aftermarket bulbs voids the warranty on the stock bulbs, as well as the wiring harnesses IF they are damaged as a direct result of those bulbs. For example, if you put in too high a wattage aftermarket bulb and it fries the wiring, ixnay on the arrantywa.Make sense?
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

Does a unichip void the warranty? I have read that they do, and that they don't. I have toyed with the idea of getting one but don't wanna ruin the extended warranty that I paid for.

well, as with any a/m part, it will NOT void your warranty unless it causes a problem w/ something. then that item would not be covered under warranty. i learned w/ my tundra to keep all the factory parts like the airbox so if there is a CEL from the CAI, i can reinstall the original airbox and take the car in to get it checked out. for instance, i cut the DRL wire and grounded the one side. this would not be covered under warranty because i can't bring it back to stock. so if there was a prob, that would be out of pocket for me.as for an ECU mod, I have the unichip. no problems what so ever. and just like my CAI, i can uninstall it in 15 mins. takes much longer w/ the CAI! it doesn't replace teh ECU, but is a piggy back. so theoretically, you should still be able to get any and all codes from the ECU if there's a prob. I forget which thread it is, but someone was already talking aobut this in the forced induction forum i believe.
