Ok here is the story. I graduate from Penn State in 15 days with a degree in agricultural business management. I interned with New Holland (they make tractors) the past two summers. I had hoped to work for them but i was not putting all my eggs in one basket. so i applied to a number of other places well none of them hired me. New Holland is in a ton of debt right now so they arent hiring anyone. I recently applied to be asst. manager of a tractor supply store in state college. If i dont get this position i dont know what i will do. i ahve two options 1. move home find some kind of job live with my parents for free but possibly have them drive me crazy 2. live with a friend of mine in his house for 350 a month and try and find some job in state college area? while working these temporary jobs i will continue to apply for career type postions. I dunno throw your 2 cents in

i would move in w/the parents for a while. this way, you can save up cash from your temp job and when you do find the job you're looking for, you'll have some money to get you started on moving out. good luck man, the job market sucks!

Check this out:http://www.lawnsite.com/forumd...id=58I am in the lawn care business as a second job, for all of about a month now. I have picked up three accounts so far, and have two quotes out now. I have already realized that there is more work out there than I could possibly handle. If I had your degree, and the means to get into landscaping, fertilizing, pesticides, etc a good living could be made.Granted, this is seasonal work and for those who like to work outside (which is few) I'm having a blast and making some good side money even with limiting myself to grass cutting, trimming, blowing off driveway and sidewalks only. (Mo,blo, n go)Unfortunatly there is a good capital investment required up front.Just my .02

what kind of position are you hoping to find? I've never met anybody with a degree in agricultural business management before. Is it that much different from a standard business management degree? There is a ton of agricultural businesses here in Wisconsin, but like others have said, the job market right now stinks. I wish the best of luck to you! and Congrats to you the new graduate!

Two thoughts: have you applied with the Dept. of Agriculture? A gov't job is a steady job, and allows you to travel around the world on assignments. Secondly, at your age, you are about to enter into a new realm: liking your parents. While I understand you are at the beginning of this human stage and may indeed be sick of roommates and want nothing more than true independence, your are close to embarking on a time when you and your parents will become friends, and see each other in a new light. Trust me, this stage does not last long, since your parents will not be around forever. Enjoy the journey my friend. Life is short.
well, luckily i was able to move back home when i was going thru my divorce. unfortunately, i haven't moved back out! LOL. but, really, it's difficult at first, but once your folks get used to the fact that you're not a child anymore, you may enjoy their company and spending some time with them. yes, i get frustrated with mine, but all in all, i love them and am grateful they are there for me whenever times get tough. i also have to pay them a minimal monthly rent (mainly for the up keep of my 2 dogs). when money is tight, they let me slide.i'd move back home, save your pennies, work hard and get your resume out there! then when you do find the right job, you will be able to afford to move if necessary. pay off and save your money as much as possible. don't spend it all like a moron (speaking from experience). i'm fortunate enough that our job market in alaska is actually growing, pay is higher than most areas and i work for a great up and coming company. without my degree. good luck to you, russ!
ahh sounds like some good advice and yes agbm is pretty much like regular business its a aplit major between the colleges i took up to the jr core in the buisness college and then senior year my business classes were in the ag college. I also had to take 3 tech ag courses for which i chose soils, agronomy and horticulture.

Don't fret about it too much. There are a lot of people out there who are in the same boat as you. At this point in time I would just try to find a job that you enjoy until you can get your foot into the door of your chosen field. You might be surprised. I graduated from community college with a degree in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and I have been working in the warehouse of a publishing company for the last 5 years. And I love it. I think the whole key to life is to find somethiing that makes you happy and gives you a sense of accomplishment. There is still plenty of time for you to find that one Ag position that you are hoping for.
Being in the same industry I can relate. I have a degree in Ag Engineering. The whole ag industry, at least in the Cdn prairies is in the toilet right now. Mad cow is kicking us in the a$$, and no one is hiring.I'm surprised that CNH isn't hiring down there, because they are hiring engineers like mad up here. I don't know what they're doing on the econ/business side of things, though. Their recent hiring streak may be due to them moving their combine header production to the plant. That being said, I know that someone else suggested gov't, and that is a good idea. What about the local banks? Don't they have some sort of agricultural loans officer or something? The local dealerships would be a good place to try, as well as every fertilizer and chemical dealer around. It might just be an agronomy summer job, but at least it gives you something. As far as moving back home or not, I guess it depends on your financial situation, and what you're willing to do. Personally, if I didn't have a job after graduation, I wouldn't have moved back home after college, but that was a matter of pride.Keep us posted!

It might take some time to get the job you are looking for, simply because of the poor job market right now. don't get discouraged, and keep up your job hunting and networking! In the past it has always seemed that there was more activity from employers in the summer, at least in my experience. I think it is because they are bombarded by new graduates resume's all spring, and it takes them some time to sort through them and do interviews. I graduated in 2000 when the job market was hot, and it still took a year for me to find a career type of job.Get yourself something to bring in cash for now. It always looks better to employers if you have been working than if you have been out of work, even if its not a highly skilled position. You'll find a job, just be patient!Oh, and I would hit it up with the 'rents too. If they are offering you a place for free, why turn it down? Sure you will still have disagreements from time to time, but you are also no longer a teenager and I am sure they will realize that too and treat you appropriately. Plus, if you get a job, and are otherwise looking for a better job, its not like you will be sitting around at home all that much.
Quote, originally posted by russ257 »on a side note I applied to work at the circuit city at home in the mobile electronics sales dept. Ahh yes the retail world...I worked as a sales manager at CompUSA while looking for my current job. Always a good source of income, but the hours stink. Usually you can call in sick or get a day off if you have an interview though. Plus, at least at Best Buy and CompUSA, there is a pretty decent discount.
