OK... Can't stand it anymore

Post by vibecrxsi240sxse »

I downloaded the installation manual for the sc and read it start to finish about 10 times. Got home from work and looked thoroughly, almost trance-like at each step I will face if I install myself. I tell myself, it's only money... you can't take it with you, get the sc NOW!!! I know someone who owns a gm dealership and he would probably work with me on $$. I hope someone will reiterate the warranty is 12 months for self install and 36 months for GM install. I have the money to do this and with gas already 1.65 a gallon, who gives a hoot if I have to pay 1.83 for supreme!! Anyone who has the sc, please comment here. I REALLY want to do this now and when I first found genvibe, I expressed my interest. My '04 is 6 months old and has 5K miles. I also am the original owner of a extremely well-kept CRXSI from 1991 but the miles are too high for me to hotrod it. My 1991 240sx has 84k original miles and I am the second owner of it. Nissan built an awsome sports car when they made that one. It has 155 hp and 160 to pound of torque so I kinda know what the vibe will do with a sc. My wife drives the Vibe 80% of the time but told me to hot rod it if I wanted to. We hadn't bought a new car since the '91 Crx and decided for a vibe because 1) my mother bought an '03 in February last year and 2) her brother, my uncle, is a big-wig with GMAC and got us the employee deal and 3) this car is cool!! I haven't had a torquey high hp car for a long time and will regret not having more fun even if it costs a bit. A lot of new cars coming down the pipe lately have lots more punch for the buck and I'll wonder if I'd have been happier with a Mazda, Nissan, SRT4, you get the point....higher output engines. Sorry for that rambling paragraph... way too long.I need from all who are reading this some encouragement to fork over the money. I'll report on my experience to maybe help others who are considering this change also. I feel after reading the sc instructions that I could maybe do this install myself and want to know from anyone who did the job themselves how it went. I do all the service for my cars. I've installed a cam in my Honda, brakes on all my cars, exhaust system recently on my 240, lowered my Honda in my driveway years ago, throttle cable and a motor mount last month on the honda, so on and so on. I am a shade tree mechanic. My vibe is auto '04 and all I have done so far is tint windows, and put a bazooka sub in it. Got all packages available for the 04 except for nav system. Shadow, twotone, 17" wheelsThanks for much needed input and support. VIBECRXSI240SX

I'm lovin' my supercharger, but it sounds like you have pretty well convinced yourself to get it. It sounds like your mechanical skills are up to par for a self install. The GM warranty sucks anyway, and it is only good for the measly 3 years of the original warranty if you have it installed at the time of delivery of the vehicle. If you install it yourself you will still have a 12 month warranty on the supercharger, just not labor. Since I went the TRD/Unichip route, I’m running with no warranty at all. Remember though, this is really a Toyota with a well proven engine which the supercharger was specifically designed and rigorously tested for. To bad there is not more competitive pricing for GM performance parts, the TRD complete superchargers are going for as low as $2450. Maybe your connections at GM can hook you up. You are still going to need to lean that fuel ratio out, The split second A/F controllers are doing a good job for the Matrix guys. You should also throw a magnaflow cat-back on there right away, this should be your minimum set-up. Oh yea, and don’t forget the colder spark plugs and a nice TRD high flow air filter. And one more thing, convert it to a 5-speed while you are at it.
Base Shadow monotone 5-spd, Moons & Tunes, Power Package & ABS. Alloy wheels, Progress RSB, Silverstars. TRD supercharger w/ custom tuned Unichip, and magnaflow true cat-back exhaust.

Sounds like you're ready to do it. With your GM connections, you might get a price deal too! Be sure there's a Unichip installer/tuner near you if you decide go with the base Toyota TRD S/C kit without ECU and the Unichip. The nearest Unichip authorized tuner to me is over 2 hours away!

For the price of a supercharger for the Vibe, you could really make that CRX a nice car. Being a 91, it's old but only in domestic years. Remember, its a Honda. It's probably not even at half-life. I'd rather dump the money into the CRX myself. I used to have a CRX once upon a time, and would love to buy another someday. I wish they still made them. They were a great car.

He was asking for advice and I gave him mine. And I was just sayin' that $3000 could get you more power in the CRX than it could in the Vibe because there are more options than just one supercharger. You could put a supercharger in the CRX for around $1500 which would leave you with plenty of money for NOS.

Thanks for all the posts folks. I appreciate your input. I have just a couple of minutes during my lunch to respond. I love all three cars which presents a dilemma of which one to mod. This is a vibe forum so I'd like to hear more about sc problems or quirks pertaining to vibes. Remember my wife drives this car mainly and carries our 2 young (7 & 3 years) boys in it. I can't have it crapping out on her while she drives it 200 miles to see her sister. I'll probably have the dealer install just in case there are any drivability problems. I'm putting a couple of calls in now to get the ball rolling. Later....

Slight changes at work= promotion and a small raise also. Been talking to the wife and am selling the MPV and Crx shortly. I have owned that Honda since before my kids were born and have put MANY hours into upkeep. Almost a love affair with that car. Anyway, I'm in the market for a new car and will probably get a mid size sport coupe and also keeping my 240sx. Got my eye on the Mazda 6s, which has 220hp and 192 ftlbs torque. It is a little cheaper than the 3.5 Altima but a neighbor just bought an Altima 2 weeks ago and that thing is FAST!!!! Motor Trend did an article recently and claimed it was the fastest 0-60mph car they had ever tested. 5.95 seconds. So the way I see it, get some $ for the two cars and add some savings for down payment. I could have a smokin' coupe with a small monthly note. It's been 7 years since I've had a car note. Oh well....Still lovin my Vibe though. SC moved to the 'B' list for now.

Sorry to quibble, but she's not just "the" wife, my friend. She's your wife. Be proud of it. Announce it here, too. This is just one of those little things that drives me up the wall. She deserves to be called your wife, as in your's. She's not the wife, as in anybody's.In one post you did it right, so I give you credit for that.

Using the article "the" is more definitive than using "a", and can be more definitive than using "my". I believe that for someone to assume that she is anybody's wife (like you posted), the phrase would have to be "a wife". Let me give you the following example:This is my sports sedan OR This is THE sports sedan. This is my ex wife, this is my 2nd wife, this is my 3rd wife OR This is THE wife. I will continue to refer to her as "the wife" - but it is not a lack of pride, nor a lack of respect, that allows me to use those words...>>

ya, she isn't just anyone's or YOUR wife, but THE wife... i have titles for all my relatives. i call my grandma, THE grandmother, my cousins THE cousins... and my parents as THE parents. i used to call my ex inlaws, THE OTHER mother... and so forth. and the ex as THE husband. since i didn't own him, but there wasn't anyone else either... so, yes, if i were to get married again, then i'd better be THE wife. the one and only wife! and not just any wife, but THE wife LOL! but i can understand the argument. it can be viewed both negative and positive depending on where your emphasis is placed. if it's just the wife, then it's blah.... like that nagging person you come home to at work that annoys you or something. but if it's THE wife, then it's implied she is the one and only one for you, like the love of your life. that's just my take on it.but back on topic...

Man I have no idea. It truly is very nice. New clutch, new kuhmo ecsta rubber, new exhaust, lowered, 16x7 konig wheels, and a 1500 stereo. 162k miles and it drives and brakes straight and true with no shaking or pulling. Never been wrecked and the red paint is pretty good. I am the original owner and maybe someone would put more value on that fact. Any suggestions for asking price??

Just revisiting some old posts...... Sold the CRX back in Feb '06 for 3k, felt that it was a fair price for such a unique car.Funny thing is, I saw myself selling it to some youngster who would hotrod/then wreck it.... Instead, a coworker, who is mid 40's aged, bought it for a commuter car

Not yet, but I did sell my house yesterday and made enough to buy about 15 SC's. Since that original post, I've bought a ski boat, a Honda Pilot that I can't keep my hands off (accessories and stuff) and still LOVE my 240sx. Why oh why can't I just pull the trigger??? I'm a girlie man who can't make up his mind.

I still have the Vibe, it turns 3 on Halloween. Just hit 28,000 miles so you can see the miles are kept pretty low. I told my wife that I like her car more than my Pilot and could we trade? I will admit though that the VTEC V6 in the Pilot is a blast to put your foot into. It's got 240 hp and 242 ftlbs torque at close to 4500 rpms. My 10 year old loves to hear the cams kick in at about 4200 rpms and the VTEC scream till redline. Of course we only do that on roads that are traffic free and we shut er' down about 60mph. Don't want to get him started with wreckless driving so soon, I know I'll have my hands full in about 5 years when he gets his learner permit.
