I'm thinking about replacing the radio with an MP3 player. But I'm told I'll need to get a 1.5 din or a double din, or some sort of din thing going. Any idea what the heck this means?Sorry to post in the main forum, but I'm impatient. Please let this tread drop if ya'll so desire.

Here is some info from Crutchfield that may help:quote:We now offer several receivers that give you the versatility you've been asking for — c***ette and CD in one, easy-fit in-dash unit. We carry CD/C***ette models that fit perfectly in regular DIN (standard size), double-DIN (DD), or GM/Chrysler (CG) DIN-and-a-half size dash openings. quote:"Oversized" receivers come in two different sizes: the 3" tall (or DIN-and-a-half) slot found in many GM/Chrysler vehicles the 4" tall (or Double-DIN) opening in some Japanese vehicles. If the dimensions of your car's dash opening differ by even a fraction of an inch from these standard oversized openings, you won't be able to install one of these oversized aftermarket radios without modifying your dash. Many Fords, for instance, appear to have Double-DIN openings — in reality, the opening is a little too small. In some vehicles, the bracket system that holds the factory radio in place won't work with an oversized aftermarket receiver. In either case, we recommend installing a standard DIN-sized radio with a mounting kit. Source: Crutchfield Info Center
A number of us have replaced the original radio with aftermarket units. I have yet to see anyone put in a 1.5 din sized head unit, but I think it would fit. I absolutely don't think it will accept a 2 din (two regular sized 1 din units) without opening up the silver bezel around the radio. If you haven't already planned on it, you may want to put some better speakers in it also. I was very pleased with the change in sound over the stock base 4 speaker system. Here's a couple links of my head unit transplant and speaker replacement.http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id ... I think your question has already been answered, but for the truly (removed) retentive among us, DIN stands for Deutsche Industrie Normen, which is the German standards organization.Metra makes a very nice kit (part # in one of the threads referenced above) that puts a 1 DIN stereo and a little stash zone in the 1.5 DIN spot.[edit: grammar]
